On the Christmas Day 2011 a Briton, Khuram Shaikh Zaman was murdered and his Russian girlfriend gang raped in a resort in Tangalle, Sri Lanka. [1]

Background

Khuram Shaikh Zaman, age 32, was a Red Cross worker from Milnrow, in Greater Manchester. [2] He had been fitting prosthetic limbs in Gaza in the previous months and was on holiday in Sri Lanka with his 23 year old Russian girl friend, Victoria Alexandrovna, hoping to spend Christmas and New Year in the island. They were staying at a resort in Tangalle, which was owned by Sampath Chandra Pushpa Vidanapathirana, a local council leader and political ally of the then president Mahinda Rajapakse. [1] [3]

Events

As Christmas Day dawned there were about 60 people in the dance floor, both locals and foreigners. Both Shaikh and his girlfriend were there when a brawl erupted between a group of men. When Shaikh got involved to help a man being assaulted about six to eight men led by Sampath Vidanapathirana assaulted and killed Khuram Shaikh and sexually abused his girlfriend who was found on the beach with her clothes torn apart and with bruises on her body. She was admitted to the Matara hospital from which she was transferred to the Karapitiya hospital. [1] [3]

Trial and Conviction

The trial of the guilty delayed for over two years amid allegations of interference because of Sampath Vidanapathirana's political connections. But under intense diplomatic pressure by the UK government[ citation needed ] Sampath Vidanapathirana was jailed for 20 years for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with three other men in July 2014 almost two years after the crime. Lahiru Kelum, U. Sama Deshapriya and Praneeth Chathuranga who were convicted of Mr Shaikh's killing with the former council leader were all also found guilty of raping a woman. [4]

Aftermath

In response to the court decision a statement from the British High Commission in Colombo said: "We hope that this will bring some closure for his family and friends who have faced a long and difficult fight for justice.

"We will continue to monitor any developments in the case closely." [4]

This incident and many such incidents were highlighted by the opposition to showcase the widespread lawlessness in the country fueled by political meddling with the judiciary. This led to the ultimate defeat of president Mahinda Rajapakse in the presidential election 2015.[ citation needed ]

Jayaprakash Sittampalam Tissainayagam is a Sri Lankan journalist. He was detained by the Terrorism Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Police on 7 March 2008. He was held without charge for almost 6 months. He was indicted on politically motivated charges under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act for intending to incite communal hatred through writing, and furthering terrorist acts through the collection of money for his publication. On 31 August 2009, he was convicted of the charges by the Colombo High Court and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The Sunday Leader was an English-language Sri Lankan weekly newspaper published by Leader Publications (Private) Limited. It was founded in 1994 and is published from Colombo. Its sister newspapers are the Iruresa (Irudina) and the defunct The Morning Leader. Founded by brothers Lasantha Wickrematunge and Lal Wickrematunge, the newspaper is known for its outspoken and controversial news coverage. The newspaper and its staff have been attacked and threatened several times and its founding editor Lasantha Wickrematunge was assassinated.

The White Flag incident is the massacre of surrendering leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and their families by the Sri Lankan Army on 18 May 2009 in Mullivaikal, Mullaitivu, Vanni, Sri Lanka. The LTTE's Political Wing leader, Balasingham Nadesan and Pulidevan agreed to surrender and contacted the United Nations, the governments of Norway, United Kingdom, United States and the International Committee of the Red Cross. They were given assurance by Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, and told to surrender at a particular place by Basil Rajapakse. LTTE's request for a third party witness to oversee the surrender was not granted by the Sri Lankan government. The LTTE surrendered to the 58 Division carrying white flags, but were reportedly shot dead. Sarath Fonseka, then the Sri Lankan Army Chief stated that they had been shot dead on the orders of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to Shavendra Silva, commander of the 58 Division. Balachandran Prabhakaran, Prabhakaran's 12-year-old son, was also killed after surrendering along with his bodyguards. A UN Panel states the LTTE leaders intended to surrender. The Sri Lankan government has denied any accusations of wrongdoing.

Sexual violence against Tamils in Sri Lanka has occurred repeatedly during the island's long ethnic conflict. The first instances of rape of Tamil women by Sinhalese mobs were documented during the 1958 anti-Tamil pogrom. This continued in the 1960s with the deployment of the Sri Lankan Army in Jaffna, who were reported to have molested and occasionally raped Tamil women.
