On 23 September 2021, Moinul Haque, a 33-year-old wage labourer, was shot and killed by police in Assam, India.

Background

On the night of September 19, [1] villagers in Dholpur, Assam were served an eviction notice, which asked them to vacate the area by the next morning. The villagers staged a peaceful protest against the eviction. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Aftermath

The state government of Assam has initiated an investigation, to be overseen by a retired High Court judge, into the violence that occurred on Thursday. The cameraman Bijay Bonia, responsible for the fatal attack, has been apprehended and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a local court.

Some 800 families were displaced during the operation to remove encroachments at Dholpur since Monday. The state aims to reclaim 4,500 bighas of government land for an agricultural initiative. According to the police, the locals pelted them with stones, leading to the use of necessary force. [7]

Violence erupted in the state of Rajasthan on 23 May 2008 when police fired on protesters belonging to the Gurjar caste who were demanding a Special status under India's reservation system. In retaliation, the protesters lynched a policeman in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. In response, police shot at protesters as they tried to damage railway lines and government property. At least 15 were killed on the spot.

The majority of Muslims in Assam are associated with the traditional culture and society of Akhand Bharat or Greater India, with about 10.67% of the population identifying as Muslim, the second largest religion in the Republic of India. There are two main types of Islam in Assam: Shia Islam, practiced by about 1.5% of Muslims, and Sunni Islam, a mix of traditional and modern followers, practiced by about 98.5% of Muslims. Jarolpokpi, also called Zairawn, is a census village at the southern end of the Jiribam plain in the Jiribam district, Manipur, India. It occupies a narrow plain between the Vangaitlang range in the east and Sejang hills in the west, covering 2.47 km2 (0.95 sq mi) area. Included in the census village are a Hmar village Zairawn, two Thadou Kuki villages Mongbung and Sejang Kuki, and a Meitei village Mongbung Meitei. The combined population of the Jarolpokpi census village is 1,237 people, of whom 64.2 percent are Scheduled Tribes.
