Elizabeth Kimball de Albuquerque Poor is a Brazilian artist.
Born in Brazil, Kim Poor first exhibited at the age of 12. At 17 she left Brazil to study Fine Arts at the Parsons School of Design in New York City with Larry Rivers and at Skidmore College in upstate New York where she developed a new technique in painting with ground glass on steel. [1] In 1982, she enrolled at the Central School of Art and Design in London to pursue her interests in printmaking with Norman Ackroyd R.A.
Her style and technique of painting uses powdered glass fused on steel and is known as “Diaphanism”. [2]
When writing about Poor's 1997 work "What the Jaguar Saw", art critic Edward Lucie-Smith said; "Jaguars play a major role in the mythology of the Amazonian Indians. The Brazilian artist Kim Poor, working with a demanding technique in which tiny specks of pure pigment are fused onto a metal surface, here gives the beast a godlike presence." [3] With further reference to the technique, this time in relation to Poor's 1997 work "Macaw and the Moon", he comments, "This is a painting in enamel on metal. The technique the artist uses seems wonderfully well-suited to the mystical atmosphere she wants to evoke. Because it allows her to create both the intense colors of the bird in the foreground, and the ethereal quality of the figure symbolizing the moon in the background." [4]
In 1981, Poor married the British musician Steve Hackett. She created numerous artworks for his music releases. [5] They divorced in 2007, which led Poor to file a legal case against Hackett, claiming she was a joint owner of Stephen Hackett Ltd., which was where all future royalties from Genesis songs he had written and performed were paid into. In 2006, Hackett arranged for all royalties to be paid directly to him rather than the company, which Poor argued was in breach of their agreement; she claimed that she was entitled to a share of the money. [6] Poor also challenged Hackett's right to make new albums independently, causing further issues. [7] The case was settled in 2010. [5]
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is a form of painting that involves a heated wax medium to which colored pigments have been added. The molten mix is applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are sometimes used. The simplest encaustic medium could be made by adding pigments to wax, though recipes most commonly consist of beeswax and damar resin, potentially with other ingredients. For pigmentation, dried powdered pigments can be used, though some artists use pigmented wax, inks, oil paints or other forms of pigmentation.

Stephen Richard Hackett is an English guitarist who gained prominence as the lead guitarist of the progressive rock band Genesis from 1971 to 1977. An oil pastel is a painting medium that consists of powdered pigment mixed with a binder mixture of non-drying oil and wax. Oil pastel is a type of pastel. They differ from other pastels which are made with a gum or methyl cellulose binder, and from wax crayons which are made without oil. The surface of an oil pastel painting is less powdery than one made from other pastels, but more difficult to protect with a fixative. The colors of oil pastels are bold and bright. They can be blended easily but they can break easily too.

Dorothy Henriques-Wells was a Jamaican painter and art teacher. She is known for her sparse, vibrant watercolors depicting the plants and landscapes of Jamaica. She has works in the National Gallery of Jamaica and she received the Silver Musgrave Medal for Art in 1987. Henriques-Wells graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1951, where she was the institution's first Black alumna. She taught art at Jamaican high schools and colleges for over two decades.
Edward Howard Betts was an American painter, collagist, author, and teacher. He was known for his abstract paintings which he developed using an improvisational method. He was also an accomplished painter of realistic watercolors. Betts published three instructional books on painting and taught at the University of Illinois.
