Kipoi Tonny Nsubuga (born 26 June 1978), also known as Tony Kipoi, was a member of the ninth Parliament of Uganda from 2011 until 2014, representing Bubulo West Constituency in Manafwa District. [1] A member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), he was elected with 72% of the vote[ citation needed ]. As of April 2018, he is facing a court martial for treason, among other charges. [2]
Kipoi was born in Bunefule–Bugobero subcounty. His father was a policeman who died when Kipoi was still a young boy, and his mother a domestic worker. As a child, he was constantly moving between Mbale, Nairobi and Kampala. He has three brothers, Michael, Robert and Joseph. Kipoi is also referred to by his initials TK and his clan name Kipoi. [3]
Kipoi is the founder of the Coalition of Market Venders of Uganda (COMAVU), a body which advocates for the right of the under privileged traders in Uganda. He also ran multimedia companies in South Africa, Botswana and the Netherlands. From May 2006 to 2009, he switched into community based activities back home, focussing on health, education, and orphans[ citation needed ]
Kipoi was inaugurated as the Member of Parliament of Bubulo West on 17 May 2011,[ citation needed ] after defeating incumbent Fred Bukeni, former minister Wanzusi Wasieba and others in the NRM primaries. [4] He survived an immediate challenge to his election brought by 800 petitioners, with the Court of Appeal setting aside an order for a by-election made by the High Court. [5] [6] At the time of his election, Kipoi was the youngest directly-elected member of parliament at the age of 32.[ citation needed ]
Kipoi served on the Committee of Defense and Internal Affairs and Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE).
Kipoi was arrested in December 2012 [7] and charged with treason on the grounds that he was recruiting personnel from Uganda as well as Congolese rebels as the basis for a potential coup. [8] In June 2013, he was arrested separately on charges of car theft, before apparently fleeing to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) while on bail. [9] The treason charges were withdrawn in February 2014, with proceedings transferred to a court martial. [10] He was reported to have been arrested in the DRC in November 2013, but accorded "guest-of-the-state" status. [11] He was then rearrested in February 2014 following an extradition request from Uganda, but as of November 2014 had not been transferred to Ugandan custody. [11] In February 2018, Kipoi was arrested in Botswana, charged with four counts of obtaining money by false pretences [12] and extradited to Uganda in early March. [13]
In February 2014, Kipoi was expelled from Parliament for missing 15 sittings without a convincing explanation. [14]

Warren Kizza Besigye Kifefe, known as Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye, is a Ugandan physician, politician, and former military officer of the Uganda People's Defence Force. He served as the president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) political party and was an unsuccessful candidate in Uganda's 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 presidential elections, losing all of them to the incumbent, Yoweri Museveni, who has been president of Uganda since 26 January 1986. The results of the 2006 elections were contested in court, and the court found massive rigging and disenfranchisement. Besigye allowed an early internal FDC election for a successor president, which took place on 24 November 2012.
John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, SC is a Ugandan politician who served as the ninth Prime Minister of Uganda from 24 May 2011 to 19 September 2014. He played an instrumental role in Uganda's protracted liberation struggle from several tyrannical governments (1972-1986) and is a founding member of the National Resistance Movement, the ruling political party in Uganda.
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known by his stage name Bobi Wine, is a Ugandan politician, singer, and actor. He is a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East constituency in Wakiso District, in Uganda's Central Region. He also leads the National Unity Platform political party. In June 2019, he announced his candidacy for the 2021 Ugandan presidential election. He participated in the 2021 election, in which, according to official results, he lost to incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, although he claims this result was fraudulent.
Barbara Nekesa Oundo is a Ugandan politician and diplomat, who serves as Uganda's High Commissioner to South Africa, based in Pretoria. In that capacity, she also represents her country, to the nations of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.

Kassiano Ezati Wadri is a Ugandan social worker and politician. He is the incumbent independent Member of Parliament, representing Arua Municipality in the 10th Parliament, effective 29 August 2018. The seat fell vacant when Ibrahim Abiriga of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), was assassinated in June 2018.

The People Power, Our Power movement is a resistance pressure group in Uganda. It is led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, who is the MP for Kyadondo East constituency. The movement seeks to unite Ugandans on issues such as ending human rights abuse, corruption and redefining the rule of law, with a focus on young Ugandans. The movement was primarily sparked by civil unrest with Yoweri Museveni's extended presidency, after he announced plans to extend his third-longest tenure in Africa by seeking re-election in 2021.
Anita Annet Among is a Ugandan accountant, lawyer and politician who is the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda since 2022. She also concurrently serves as the elected member of parliament for the Bukedea District Women Constituency, the same position she held in the 10th Parliament (2016–2021). She was in FDC party before she joined the ruling NRM where she was voted as the Deputy Speaker of the 10th Parliament. She is named in the torture complaint against the Ugandan government that was submitted with the International Criminal Court.

Botswana saw the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Lockdowns were implemented between March and May, and restrictions continued throughout the year. The previous year's general election was disputed by the opposition, and several cases were filed to overturn the results. Tensions rose with South Africa in 2020 as Botswana sought the prosecution of Bridgette Radebe. Concerns regarding wildlife conservation increased in 2020 as elephants began dying off in large numbers, as well as similar concerns about vultures. Armed conflicts with poachers continued throughout the year, including the killing of four men in November that caused protests in Namibia.
