Kirby T. Benedict (1810-1874) was an American attorney and judge best known as the Chief Justice of the territorial New Mexico Supreme Court from 1858 to 1866.
Benedict was born on November 23,1810,in Kent,Connecticut. He married Charlotte Curtis of Delaware,Ohio in 1834. He moved to Illinois shortly after being admitted to the bar,served a term in the state legislature,and befriended Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. [1]
President Franklin Pierce appointed Benedict associate judge of the Third Judicial District of New Mexico Territory in 1853. In 1858,President James Buchanan appointed Benedict as chief justice of the territorial Supreme Court. [2] He was assigned to the First District and headquartered in Santa Fe. From 1854 to 1866,Benedict rendered twenty-two supreme court decisions. [3]
In addition to his legal work,Benedict helped organize the Historical Society of New Mexico. He was elected as President of the Society in 1862. [3] Governor Connelly appointed Benedict to the three person committee to complete the 1865 Revised statutes and laws of the Territory of New Mexico. [3] President Andrew Johnson replaced him with Colonel John P. Slough in 1866. After losing his position as judge,he worked as a trial attorney until his license was suspended in 1871. [3] He died in Santa Fe,New Mexico of heart failure on February 27,1874.

Matthew Paul Deady was a politician and jurist in the Oregon Territory and the state of Oregon of the United States. He served on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1853 to 1859,at which time he was appointed to the newly created federal court of the state. William F. Turner was the first Chief Justice of the Territory of Arizona,serving in that capacity for about seven years. Born in Pennsylvania,he attended college in Ohio and practiced law there after graduation. When the Arizona territory was created,he sought to be appointed its first governor but was instead made Chief Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court of Arizona. Renominated to a second four-year term,he was later removed under a cloud of scandal and political opposition while having an unblemished legal record. Turner then formed a successful law practice in Kansas,but his final years were impoverished.

Samuel Chipman Parks was an American lawyer and jurist who practiced law with Abraham Lincoln,and was later appointed to serve as a justice of three different territorial supreme courts by three different presidents,serving on the Idaho Territorial Supreme Court from 1862 to 1865,the New Mexico Territorial Supreme Court from 1878 to 1882,and the Wyoming Territorial Supreme Court from 1882 to 1886.
Edward B. Green was an American attorney and jurist who was appointed by Benjamin Harrison as the first chief justice of the Oklahoma Territory Supreme Court on May 4,1890. Green,presided over a three-man panel of judges,who were also appointed by President Harrison. The other two judges,known as Associate Justices,were John G. Clark,from Illinois and Abraham J. Seay,from Missouri. Other court officials included Charles H. Filson,as clerk,Warren G. Lurty,as marshal and Horace Speed,as United States Attorney.
Christian Schlagle Eyster was an associate justice of the Colorado Territorial Supreme Court from August 11,1866,to March 2,1871. He was appointed by President Andrew Johnson in 1866,but because congress was not in session at the time of his appointment,the senate confirmed his appointment and he received his official commission on March 2,1867.
William E. Gleason was a justice of the Dakota Territorial Supreme Court from 1865 to 1866,appointed by Abraham Lincoln on February 16,1865 to succeed Joseph Lanier Williams. Gleason resigned June 30,1866,and was replaced by John W. Boyle.
