The museum was built by Endang Ernawati in 2003 because she likes kites. She collected types of kites from across Indonesia and throughout the world.

Kites often have a bridle and tail to guide the face of the kite so the wind can lift it. Some kite designs don’t need a bridle; box kites can have a single attachment point. A kite may have fixed or moving anchors that can balance the kite. One technical definition is that a kite is “a collection of tether-coupled wing sets“. The name derives from its resemblance to a hovering bird.

Muna or Wuna people are an indigenous group that inhabits the island of Muna, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Woven sarong motifs found in East Nusa Tenggara and Muna Island share similar features such as horizontal lines with basic colors of yellow, green, red, and black. The shape of their headwear also has a resemblance to each other. Since before until today, Muna fishermen often harvest sea cucumbers and go fishing up to the waters of Darwin, Australia in the Timor Sea. This has caused Muna fishermen to have been arrested several times in these waters by the Australian government. These habits may probably indicate the existence of a traditional relationship between the Muna people with Aboriginal Australians.
Kite Museum is a museum about kites in Malacca City, Malacca, Malaysia, which was officially opened in September 1995 by Chief Minister Mohd Zin Abdul Ghani in conjunction with the Regional Malay Customs seminar. It occupies the upper floor of the former Historical City Municipal Council building, originally constructed in the 1960s and believed to be built on top of the ruins of Dutch building, which also houses the People's Museum and Beauty Museum at the ground floor and top floor respectively. The museum displays various aspects of kites, such as communication, use as weapons, sport, leisure activities, how different countries make kites, different materials to make kites, role of kites in the life of people etc. It also displays the Wau Gallery, Traditional Games, Top Spinning Gallery and Datuk Wira Haji Md Borhan bin Yaman Gallery. It opens everyday from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Bagong Kussudiardja was an Indonesian artist, contemporary dance choreographer and painter. Bagong’s career kicked off after Indonesia’s independence in 1945. As a dance choreographer, Bagong has choreographed more than 200 dances. Bagong perfected his skills by studying Japanese and Indian dances. In 1957 and 1958, Bagong trained under the well-known dance choreographer Martha Graham, known for her boundary-breaking techniques. Bagong then combined the modern moves with traditional Indonesian dances. After his training, he founded Pusat Latihan Tari Bagong Kussudiardja in 1958, followed by Padepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiardja in 1978.
