Kjartan Gunnarsson (born October 4, 1951) is an Icelandic lawyer, best known for serving for 26 years as the executive director of the Icelandic conservative Independence Party from 1980 until 2006. [1] He has also worked for Landsbanki bank. [2] He is a longtime supporter and friend of former Icelandic Prime Minister Davíð Oddsson. [3]

Ágætis byrjun is the second studio album by Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós, released on 12 June 1999. The album was recorded between the summer of 1998 and the spring of 1999 with producer Ken Thomas. Ágætis byrjun represented a substantial departure from the band's previous album Von, with that album's extended ambient soundscapes replaced by Jónsi Birgisson's cello-bowed guitarwork and orchestration, using a double string octet amongst other chamber elements.

Sundlaugin is a recording studio located near Álafoss in the town of Mosfellsbær in Iceland known for being the recording and rehearsal location of post-rock band Sigur Rós. The location was originally a swimming pool built in the 1930s which had been abandoned when Sigur Rós purchased it in 1999 and converted it and adjacent buildings into a studio.

Written in the 13th century, it tells of people in the Breiðafjörður area of Iceland from the late 9th century to the early 11th century. Southwest is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established as Reykjanes in 1959 following the nationwide extension of proportional representation for elections to the Althing. It was renamed Southwest in 2003 when the Reykjanes area of constituency was merged into the Southern constituency following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland. Southwest is conterminous with the Capital region but excludes Reykjavík Municipality which has its own constituencies. Kjartan is a masculine given name found in the Nordic countries, most prominently in Iceland and Norway. The Old Norse name Kjartan was a shortening of Mýrkjartan, from Old Irish: Muirchertach, the name of an Irish king whose daughter Melkorka was brought to Iceland as a slave. The Irish name Muirchertach, meaning "mariner", is modernised to Muircheartach, anglicised as Murtagh.

Iceland was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1988 by Beathoven with the song "Þú og þeir (Sókrates)". Beathoven was the winner of the Icelandic national final, Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 1988, organised by Icelandic broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV).

Kjartan Antonsson is an Icelandic businessman and former footballer who played as a midfielder.
