Kola Adesina (born 1964) is a Nigerian entrepreneur, managing director of Sahara Group, [1] [2] [3] former chairman of Egbin Power Plc, [4] and board chairman of Ikeja Electric. [5]

Education

Adesina earned a B.sc degree in Insurance and M.Sc degree in Business from the University of Lagos. He furthered his education by obtaining executive programmes at Harvard Business School and The Wharton School Advanced Management Program. [6] [7]

Career

Before Sahara Group, Adesina started his career working in the insurance industry. He later joined Sahara Group where he moved up the ladder due to his selling skills. [8] At Sahara Group, he led various projects which included the nationwide strategic management of the supply chain of fuel to the emergency power plant of the defunct National Electricity Power Authority (now Power Holding Company Nigeria Limited), the Majestic Oil delegation on the acquisition of the Sierra Leone Refinery and also managed the crude oil contract of the group in Côte d'Ivoire where he also served as the director of infrastructure, responsible for the acquisition of strategic assets in Africa. He served as a member of the Presidential Committee inaugurated by President Jonathan on the Accelerated Expansion of the Electricity Infrastructure in Nigeria, which culminated in the unbundling of PHCN successor companies. He also chairs the board of Ikeja Electric. [12] [13]

In 2022, he was crowned as Vanguard Private Sector Icon of the Year. [14] [15]

Egbin Power Plc is the largest power generating station in Nigeria with an installed capacity of 1,320 MW consisting of 6 Units of 220MW each. The station is located at Ijede / Egbin, in Ikorodu, It is about 40 km north east of the city of Lagos, and is situated on low land in egbin & ijede and bounded by the Lagoon to the south, Agura/Gberigbe to the north and situated in Ijede Local Council Development Area.

The Nigerian energy supply crisis refers to the ongoing failure of the Nigerian power sector to provide adequate electricity supply to domestic households and industrial producers despite a rapidly growing economy, some of the world's largest deposits of coal, oil, and gas and the country's status as Africa's largest oil producer. Currently, only 45% of Nigeria's population is connected to the energy grid whilst power supply difficulties are experienced around 85% of the time and almost nonexistent in certain regions. At best, average daily power supply is estimated at four hours, although several days can go by without any power at all. Neither power cuts nor restorations are announced, leading to calls for a load shedding schedule during the COVID-19 lockdowns to aid fair distribution and predictability.

Nigeria has a chronic electricity shortage that has affected the country for many years. In 2022, its power grid collapsed twice in one week.

It is a member of the West African Power Pool, an agency committed to improving energy flow across ECOWAS member states through joint financing between member countries for better sustainability of power projects within the region.
