Kopernik is a non-profit organization headquartered in Indonesia that finds what works to reduce poverty in the last mile. In the US, it is a registered 501(c) organization. [1]
Kopernik was co-founded by Toshihiro (Toshi) Nakamura and Ewa Wojkowska. Both had worked for the United Nations – Nakamura in Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Sierra Leone and the US and Wojkowska in Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, Thailand and New York. [2]
The organization is named for the astronomer Mikołaj Kopernik. [3]
The organization consists of four legal entities: Kopernik Solutions, Yayasan Kopernik, PT Kopernik, and Kopernik Japan. [4]
Donations are distributed by local non-governmental organizations (NGOs). An NGO must be registered and submit an application to Kopernik that outlines its goals and distribution methods. Following approval, proposals are posted on the website and prospective donors may choose among them. [5]
Experimentation Project focus on rapid experimentation of promising solutions to problems faced by people living in the last mile. These solutions may be technology driven (physical or information and communication technologies (ICT)) or approaches inspired by behavioral insights. The experimentation projects and data sets are generally small-scale, low-investment tests of promising ideas. Last Mile Consulting is a professional advisory service to corporate and public sector clients. Technology Distribution provides a simple and affordable products that address the typical problems faced by people living in the last mile.
The distributed products include purified drinking water, solar lantern and other offered technologies include drip irrigation systems, grain storage, K-Honey filter and providing reusable menstrual pads for education on menstruation as well as sexual reproductive health.
Since September 2017, Kopernik responded Emergency Response (ER), Mount Agung eruption, Lombok earthquake, Central Sulawesi earthquake, tsunami and liquefaction and Sunda Strait Tsunami. Kopernik distributed N95 respiratory masks and installed Fan-Filter Unit (FFU) for a haze-safe room in school in West Kalimantan.
The organization has received awards, including runner-up status in Crunchie's 2010 CleanTech category and a Gold-level transparency designation from the non-profit evaluation organization GuideStar. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has chosen Kopernik's Ibu Inspirasi/Wonder Women initiative as a Momentum for Change 2014 Lighthouse Activity.

Francisco Xavier do Amaral was an East Timorese politician. A founder of the Frente Revolucionária de Timor Leste Independente (Fretilin), Amaral was sworn in as the first President of East Timor when the country, then a Portuguese colony, made a unilateral declaration of independence on 28 November 1975. He was a member of the National Parliament for the Timorese Social Democratic Association from 2001 until his death in 2012. Amaral was also known as "Abo (Grandfather) Xavier", a term of endearment, by East Timorese.
Simeulue Regency is a regency in the Aceh special region of Indonesia. It occupies the whole island of Simeulue, 150 km off the west coast of Sumatra, with an area of 1,838.09 square kilometres. It had a population of 80,674 at the 2010 census and 92,865 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 94,876.
Indonesia was the first country to be seriously affected by the earthquake and tsunami created by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake on 26 December 2004, swamping the northern and western coastal areas of Sumatra, and the smaller outlying islands off Sumatra. Nearly all the casualties and damage took place within the province of Aceh. The time of arrival of the tsunami was between 15 and 30 minutes after the deadly earthquake. According to the country's National Disaster Relief Coordination Agency, around 130,000 people were dead and 37,063 were missing. In addition, the UN estimated that 655,000 people were homeless and sheltering in scattered refugee camps across the province.
The 2005 Nias–Simeulue earthquake occurred on 28 March off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. At least 915 people were killed, mostly on the island of Nias. The event caused panic in the region, which had already been devastated by the massive tsunami triggered by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, but this earthquake generated a relatively small tsunami that caused limited damage. It was the third most powerful earthquake since 1965 in Indonesia.

Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS), formerly Jakarta International School, is a private, embassy-backed international school in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was established in 1951 for expatriate students living in Jakarta and is the largest international primary and secondary school in Indonesia. JIS has more than 2,000 students aged 3 to 18 from over 60 nationalities. The school adheres to an American curriculum while taking pieces from other curriculum models from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools. Since JIS is an American Overseas School, it is assisted by the US Department of State's Office of Overseas Schools. The United States Department of State reports the curriculum offered at Jakarta Intercultural School "has a strong international focus", and considers it one of the best schools overseas for preparing students for American university entrance. JIS has three campuses, two solely for elementary students in Pattimura and Pondok Indah, and one much bigger and considered the main campus for junior high and high school students in Cilandak, South Jakarta.
East Timor and Indonesia established diplomatic relations in 2002. Both share the island of Timor. Indonesia invaded the former Portuguese colony in 1975 and annexed East Timor in 1976, maintaining East Timor as its 27th province until a United Nations-sponsored referendum in 1999, in which the people of East Timor chose independence. Following a United Nations interim administration, East Timor gained independence in 2002. Indonesia already had a consulate in Dili during the Portuguese colonial period, though Indonesia formalized their relations by establishing an embassy in Dili. Since October 2002, East Timor has an embassy in Jakarta and consulates in Denpasar and Kupang. Relations between the two countries are generally considered highly positive, despite various problems. Numerous agreements regulate cooperation in different areas. East Timorese are visa-free in Indonesia.

Badan Rehabilitasi dan Rekonstruksi (BRR) NAD-Nias, or Agency for the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Aceh and Nias, was an Indonesian government agency which coordinated and jointly implemented the recovery programme following the December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that mostly affected Aceh and the March 2005 Nias–Simeulue earthquake.

The 2010 Mentawai earthquake occurred with a moment magnitude of 7.8 on 25 October off the western coast of Sumatra at 21:42 local time. The earthquake occurred on the same fault that produced the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. It was widely felt across the provinces of Bengkulu and West Sumatra and resulted in a substantial localized tsunami that struck the Mentawai Islands.
The Artha Graha Peduli Foundation is an Indonesian social, humanitarian, environmental and philanthropic foundation whose activities began during the 1990s. It was founded in 2010 by Tomy Winata, an Indonesian businessman and philanthropist with a vision "to be able to feed at least three million people throughout Indonesia". The foundation focuses on environmental activities to mitigate the effects of global climate change.
Sahana Software Foundation is a Los Angeles, California-based non-profit organization founded to promote free and open-source software (FOSS) for disaster and emergency management. The foundation's mission statement is to "save lives by providing information management solutions that enable organizations and communities to better prepare for and respond to disasters." The foundation's Sahana family of software products includes Eden, designed for humanitarian needs management; Vesuvius, focused on the disaster preparedness needs of the medical community; and legacy earlier versions of Sahana software including Krakatoa, descended from the original Sahana code base developed following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The word "Sahana" means "relief" in Sinhalese, one of two national languages of Sri Lanka.
The 2016 Sumatra earthquake was a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck on 2 March 2016 in the Indian Ocean, approximately 800 kilometers southwest of Sumatra in Indonesia. Tsunami warnings were issued for Indonesia and Australia, but were withdrawn two hours later. There were no deaths directly related to the earthquake.
East Timor–India relations are the international relations that exist between East Timor and India. The Embassy of India in Jakarta, Indonesia is concurrently accredited to East Timor. East Timor has no diplomatic representation in India. On 7 September 2023, India has announced to open an embassy in Dili.
