In 1990, at the beginning of the Gulf War, Qatar was among the Arab countries to condemn Iraq's occupation of Kuwait. It also pledged military support to Kuwait. [4] Qatari soldiers participated in the Battle of Khafji, the first major ground engagement in the Gulf War. [5]
Amir Sabah Al-Sabah was recognized as chief mediator of the 2017 Qatari diplomatic crisis. Kuwait's neutrality and good relations with both parties were the main reasons behind its status as mediator. [6]
In 2020, Qatar and Kuwait signed a 15-year sale and purchase agreement for the supply of up to 3 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas to Kuwait per year. [7]
On 20 February 2024, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah met in Doha for the first time since the latter became the new Emir of Kuwait in December 2023. They discussed bilateral relations, the upcoming meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Qatar, and the Gaza humanitarian crisis. [8] [9] [10]

Arab states were among the first to recognize Qatar, and the country gained admittance to the United Nations and the Arab League after achieving independence in 1971. Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is Emir of Kuwait, reigning since 2023. Mishal spent most of his career in Kuwait's security and intelligence apparatus. Prior to becoming Emir at age 83, he was the oldest crown prince in the world.
Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah is a Kuwaiti politician and military officer who served as the Prime Minister of Kuwait from 24 July 2022 until his resignation on 20 December 2023. He is the eldest son of the late Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the former Emir of Kuwait.
