Since 1990 the Orchestra's Principal Conductor and Artistic Director has been Roman Kofman. The Orchestra has made many recordings and appears frequently on radio and television. The Orchestra specializes in both classical and contemporary works. Soloists who have performed with the orchestra include Gidon Kremer, Stephen Isserlis, Liana Isakadze, Andrej Hoteev, Natalia Gutman, Elisso Virsaladze, Vladymyr Krainev, Alexei Lyubimov, Boris Pergamenchikov, Misha Maisky, Ivan Monigheti, Lucia Aliberti, Viktoria Lukyanets, and Oleksandr Semchuk.

From 1975 to 1998 Sergei Polusmiak was teaching at Kharkiv Conservatory and at the Kharkiv Special Music School for Gifted Children Sergei Polusmiak started his professional career as a music educator and as a concert pianist by teaching, giving master classes, playing solo piano recitals, chamber music recitals and as a soloist with symphony orchestras. For his contribution as a concert pianist Sergei Polusmiak was awarded the title of "Merited Artist of Ukraine" by the President of Ukraine. in 1996 Sergei Polusmiak became a Full Professor of piano at Kharkiv Institute of Arts.

Yurii Leonidovych Kerpatenko was a Ukrainian conductor, orchestrator, and accordionist who was the principal conductor of the Mykola Kulish Music and Drama Theatre from 2004 until his death in 2022. He was also the principal conductor of the Gileya chamber orchestra of the Kherson Regional Philharmonic from 2000 until 2022. Kerpatenko declined to cooperate during the Russian occupation of Kherson Oblast and was killed by Russian soldiers in his home in September 2022.
