L'Amateur d'Art (or Journal de l'amateur d'art), in English, the Art Amateur, is a former French monthly magazine, specialized in visual arts. [1] [2]
Its purpose was to introduce or better understand the creative approach or works of many contemporary artists, both figurative and abstract, including Raphy, Alfred Reth, Ladislas Kijno, Alexandre Frenel, Jean-Pierre Ceytaire, Étienne Ritter, Joseph Espalioux, Alexis Hinsberger, Bernard Conte, Pierre Jutand, Tomaso Pomentale, and the sculptor Charles Machet.
Among the most renowned contributors to this publication over the decades were Gilbert Prouteau, Jean-Pierre Thiollet, Georges Pillement, Jacques Dubois, Nicole Lamothe and Pierre Mornand. [3] [4]
Well known Parisian art dealer in the post-war era, Michel Boutin was its director during the 1970s-1980s. The publication ceased in the early 1990s, shortly after his death.

Jean Clair is the pen name of Gérard Régnier. Clair is an essayist, a polemicist, an art historian, an art conservator, and a member of the Académie française since May, 2008. He was, for many years, the director of the Picasso Museum in Paris. Among the milestones of his long and productive career is a comprehensive catalog of the works of Balthus. He was also the director of the Venice Biennale in 1995.

Maison Devambez is the name of a fine printer's firm in Paris. It operated under that name from 1873, when a printing business established by the royal engraver Hippolyte Brasseux in 1826 was acquired by Édouard Devambez. At first the firm specialized in heraldic engraving, engraved letterheads and invitations. Devambez clients included the House of Orléans, the House of Bonaparte and the Élysée Palace. Devambez widened the scope of the business to include advertising and publicity, artists’ prints, luxurious limited edition books, and an important art gallery. The House became recognized as one of the foremost fine engravers in Paris, winning numerous medals and honours. With the artist Édouard Chimot as Editor after the First World War, a series of limited edition art books, employing leading French artists, illustrators and affichistes, reached a high point under the imprimatur A l'Enseigne du Masque d'Or – the Sign of the Golden Mask and with PAN in collaboration with Paul Poiret. Édouard's son, André Devambez, became a famous painter and illustrator after receiving the Prix de Rome.
Édouard Chimot was a French artist, illustrator and editor whose career reached its peak in the 1920s in Paris, through the publication of fine quality art-printed books. As artist his own work occupies a characteristic place, but as editor also his role was extremely important in bringing together some of the outstanding talents of that distinctive period in French art and providing the commissions upon which the development of their work in a formal context occurred.

Maurice Paul Jean Asselin was a French painter, watercolourist, printmaker, lithographer, engraver and illustrator, associated with the School of Paris. He is best known for still lifes and nudes. Other recurring themes in his work are motherhood, and the landscapes and seascapes of Brittany. He also worked as a book illustrator, particularly in the 1920s. His personal style was characterised by subdued colours, sensitive brushwork and a strong sense of composition and design.
