Ownership and circulation

LGBTQSD News is owned by MGW Media, LLC., and is published by San Diego LGBTQ activist and businessman, Eddie Reynoso. [1] [2]

LGBTQSD News is printed once a month, distributing 5,000 copies to over 140 locations In San Diego County. Its website features news and public commentary online with a wrap-up of stories delivered to e-mail subscribers every month. LGBTQSDNews partners with other media outlets who contribute content.

History

It was founded in 2010 as Gay San Diego, by San Diego publisher, David Manis. [3] It sold in 2019 to Sacramento-based MGW Media, LLC., owned by Sacramento businessman, Terry Sidie. He is also the owner of Faces Nightclub, and the former publisher of Mom, Guess What?, [4] a LGBTQ tabloid styled news publication that shut down in 2009. [5] [6]

The paper rebranded as LGBTQ San Diego County News following the announcement of the sale. Terry served as president of the company and as publisher of the paper, along with Nicole Murray Ramirez, who served as Associate Publisher. [7]

On April 16, 2023, Sidie announced his retirement from the publishing business and the transfer of 100% of his shares and assets in MGW Media, LLC, which includes LGBTQ San Diego County News to Eddie Reynoso, citing his role as executive director for the Equality Business Alliance- San Diego's LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, as the main reason for giving away equity in his business. On June 9, 2022, Pride Media was acquired by Equal Entertainment LLC.

Its name derives from a 1992 merger between the two major daily newspapers at the time, The San Diego Union and the San Diego Evening Tribune. The name changed to U-T San Diego in 2012 but was changed again to The San Diego Union-Tribune in 2015.

Outlook Media was a Columbus, Ohio-based lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) lifestyle and advocacy company for the Ohio queer and allied community from 1995 until late 2017. Their flagship product, Outlook Columbus was a news, politics, and lifestyle magazine. Outlook Media also published High Street Neighborhoods, managed Columbus' LGBT and allied business networking group, Network Columbus, and partnered with the Ohio Historical Society to form the Gay Ohio History Initiative. The Houston Voice, originally known as The Montrose Star, was a bi-weekly newspaper published on alternating Wednesdays in Houston, Texas. San Diego Gay & Lesbian News (SDGLN) was an online LGBT newspaper for the San Diego, California area. SDGLN features daily news and commentary online with a weekly wrap-up of stories delivered to e-mail subscribers every week. SDGLN partners with other media outlets who contribute content.

In LGBT culture, red dress parties are events in which people wear red dresses, regardless of gender. The Red Dress Party fundraising event began in Portland, Oregon in 2001, with only 75 people in attendance.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted inequities experienced by marginalized populations, and has had a significant impact on the LGBT community. Gay pride events were cancelled or postponed worldwide. More than 220 gay pride celebrations around the world were canceled or postponed in 2020, and in response a Global Pride event was hosted online. LGBTQ+ people also tend to be more likely to have pre-existing health conditions, such as asthma, HIV/AIDS, cancer, or obesity, that would worsen their chances of survival if they became infected with COVID-19. They are also more likely to smoke.

Tracy Baim is a Chicago-based LGBT journalist, editor, author, and filmmaker. She is also a former publisher of the Chicago Reader newspaper.
