No wave was a short-lived avant-garde music and art scene that emerged in the late 1970s in downtown New York City. Reacting against punk rock's recycling of rock and roll clichés, no wave musicians instead experimented with noise, dissonance and atonality in addition to a variety of non-rock genres while often reflecting an abrasive, confrontational, and nihilistic worldview.
Wiiija was a British independent record label founded in 1988 by staff from the Rough Trade Shop in Notting Hill, London. The name Wiiija is a corruption of W11 1JA, the postcode of the Rough Trade Shop in Talbot Street.
Mars was an American, New York City-based rock band, formed in 1975 when China Burg and artist Nancy Arlen (drums) brought Mark Cunningham (bass) and vocalist Sumner Crane together to talk about music. They were joined briefly by guitarist Rudolph Grey. The band played one live gig under the name China before changing it to Mars. They played a mixture of angular compositions and freeform noise music jams, featuring surrealist lyrics and non-standard drumming. All the members were said to be completely untrained in music before forming the band.
Warp Records is a British independent record label founded in Sheffield in 1989 by record store employees Steve Beckett, Rob Mitchell and record producer Robert Gordon. It is currently based in London.
Rough Trade Records is an independent record label based in London, England. It was formed in 1978 by Geoff Travis who had opened a record store off Ladbroke Grove. Having successfully promoted and sold records by punk rock and early post-punk and indie pop bands such as the Normal and Desperate Bicycles, Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such as Scritti Politti and began the label, which was informed by left-wing politics and structured as a co-operative. Soon after, Rough Trade also set up a distribution arm that serviced independent retail outlets across Britain, a network that became known as the Cartel. In 1983, Rough Trade signed the Smiths.
We Hate You South African Bastards! was the second album from the Irish band Microdisney. It was re-issued on CD with the title Love Your Enemies to reflect post-Apartheid South Africa. The album consists of early recordings of Microsdisney before they moved from Cork to London.
Shirley O'Loughlin, photographer, is a principal lecturer and course leader of BA (Hons) Photography at the University of Westminster, London, UK. She has worked with The Raincoats since 1978. Her most recent video work The Lighthouse, in collaboration with musician Ana da Silva, was shown at Galeria Ze dos Bois, Lisbon and during the Her Noise show at the South London Gallery in November 2005. She contributed to Chicks on Speed's project "Girl Monster", a compilation of women's cutting-edge music released in 2006.
Punk visual art is artwork associated with the punk subculture and the No wave movement. It often graces punk rock album covers, flyers for punk concerts and punk zines. It is sometimes showcased in art galleries and exhibition spaces. Indeed, the punk aesthetic was a dominant strand from 1982 to 1986 in the many art galleries of the East Village of Manhattan.
Andrea Belfi is an Italian electro-acoustic musician and composer. He began playing drums at the age of 14. From 1995 to 1998 he was involved in numerous punk bands. He studied art in Milan, before becoming involved in experimental music in 2000. He’s been member of electronic outfit Medves, the duo Christa Pfangen with Mattia Coletti, the trio Rosolina Mar.
Alison Statton is a Welsh singer best known for her work with Young Marble Giants. Fans of the singer have included Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Stephin Merritt, Belle and Sebastian and Renato Russo.
Live Skull is a post-punk/experimental rock band from New York City, formed in 1982.
The Cartel was a co-operative record distribution organisation in the United Kingdom, set up by a number of small independent record labels to handle their distribution to record shops. Pooling their resources in this way allowed them to compete with the larger distribution operations of the major record labels, and also to gain access to the larger shop chains.
Phonefreak Honey is a song by Birmingham-based band Sweet Jesus, and was their first fully available single. It was released on Rough Trade Records in 1992.
Recreational Records was a British record label set up in 1981 by the Bristol record shop and distributor Revolver Records. Originally formed as an independent record label with its own distribution as part of the Cartel.
Stephan Van Dam is a cartographer, graphic designer and information architect. He is the president, principal and creative director of New York–based VanDam, Inc. Van Dam holds several patents in the field of paper engineering and origami map folding. Twenty-six of his maps are in the permanent Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
The Stars of Heaven were an Irish guitar pop band formed in Dublin in 1983. They released two albums on the Rough Trade label before splitting up in 1990.
Eric Owen Parry is a British architect, designer, writer and educator. Parry is the founder and principal of Eric Parry Architects established in London in 1983. His built work includes the restoration and renewal of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, the Holburne Museum in Bath, 50 New Bond Street, 23 Savile Row, One Eagle Place in Piccadilly, Aldermanbury Square by London Wall, 30 Finsbury Square in London, and the London Stock Exchange. His projects also include a number of residential developments. Eric Parry's architectural work and design has been shown internationally on major exhibitions, including the Royal Academy of Arts, the British School at Rome, and the 2012 Venice Biennale of Architecture.
Forgemasters was a British electronic music act composed of Robert Gordon, Winston Hazel and Sean Maher. Their single "Track with No Name" was the first release by Warp Records and would help define the sound of Warp and bleep techno.
Butterfly Child is an Northern Irish group led by singer/songwriter Joe Cassidy, currently based in Chicago, Illinois. Described as "purveyors of shimmering, oceanic rock," they have released three full-length albums and numerous singles/EPs. Their new album Futures was released by Dell'Orso Records on 27 November 2015.
