Due to the large urban population and port traffic volumes, Lagos is classified as a Medium-Port Megacity.
The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. The Australian Open starts in the middle of January and continues for two weeks coinciding with the Australia Day holiday. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles; junior's championships; and wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events. Before 1988, it was played on grass courts, but since then two types of hardcourt surfaces have been used: green-coloured Rebound Ace up to 2007 and blue Plexicushion since 2008.
Lagos State is a state in southwestern Nigeria. Of the 36 states, it is both the most populous and smallest in area. Bounded to the south by the Bight of Benin and to the west by the international border with Benin, Lagos State borders Ogun State to the northeast making it the only Nigerian state to border only one other state. Named for the city of Lagos—the most populous city in Africa—the state was formed from the Western Region and the former Federal Capital Territory on 27 May 1967.

The Ikoyi Club was established as a European club in 1938 in Ikoyi, Lagos. It was originally converted from a prison to a rest house. It occupies approximately 456 acres of land. In the subsequent years, the European Club merged with the Lagos Golf Club. The 1976 Lagos WCT, also known as the 1976 Lagos Tennis Classic, was a men's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Lagos, Nigeria. The event was part of the 1976 World Championship Tennis circuit. It was the inaugural edition of the tournament, which was the first professional tennis tournament in Black Africa, and was held from February 9 to 15, 1976. Unseeded Dick Stockton won the singles title.
The Lagos International also known as Lagos International Badminton Classics is an annual open international badminton tournament held in Lagos, Nigeria. This tournament established since 2014, organized by the Lagos State Badminton Association (LSBA) and Badminton Federation of Nigeria. The tournament sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA), and has grade as BWF International Challenge level with the total prize money $15,000. The classics is expected to help Nigerian players to improve their world ranking as well as play against some of the top rated players in the world, and it is also an opportunity to showcase the positive side of Lagos and Nigeria. It is also an intervention programme of the Lagos State Government, it is a series of international open sporting events geared towards attracting the best continental and global sports talents to the shores of the region. The Lagos State Government believes that the tournament is part of series of international sports events that will bring world stars to the state.
The Nigeria Open, also called ITTF Challenge Nigeria Series or ITTF Challenge Seamester Nigeria Open is an annual table tennis tournament in Lagos, Nigeria, run by the International Table Tennis Federation as part of Challenge Series. Egyptian Omar Assar has won the most single gold medals. In 2018, the prize money for the medalist at the event was $46,000. The maiden edition was known as Lagos Classics, it was until 2014 that the tournament was listed in ITTF calendar.
Lagos Open is an International Tennis Federation accredited tournament that takes place annually at Lagos Lawn Tennis Club. It is classified as a $25,000 tournament on the Women's and Men's Circuit, and has been held in Lagos, Nigeria. Due to the West African Ebola virus epidemic, the 14th edition was competed only by African players and was made a non-point winning tournament by ITF. By 2015, the move has reversed, and the competition regained its international status. In 2018, the competition was renamed from "Governor's Cup Lagos Tennis" to "Lagos Open", which was stated by the organizers as a procedure from ITF to increase the prestige of the competition from a Futures tournaments to a Challenger series. The total prize money for the 2017 edition was $100,000.
