Lakker are an Irish electronic music duo consisting of Dara Smith and Ian McDonnell, both from Dublin, Ireland. [1] Formed in 2003, they have released a number of albums and singles on the independent Belgian electronic label R & S Records merging "IDM, new-school trip-hop, and industrial-strength techno/bass-music hybrids". [2]

Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments, digital instruments and circuitry-based music technology. In general, a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means, and that produced using electronics only. Electromechanical instruments include mechanical elements, such as strings, hammers, and so on, and electric elements, such as magnetic pickups, power amplifiers and loudspeakers. Examples of electromechanical sound producing devices include the telharmonium, Hammond organ, and the electric guitar, which are typically made loud enough for performers and audiences to hear with an instrument amplifier and speaker cabinet. Pure electronic instruments do not have vibrating strings, hammers, or other sound-producing mechanisms. Devices such as the theremin, synthesizer, and computer can produce electronic sounds.

Lakker were featured on Mary Anne Hobbs' "6 Music Recommends" on BBC Radio 6 during 2014 and 2017, [3] [4] and on Nick Luscombe's "Late Junction" on BBC Radio 3 in March 2017. [5]

Mary Anne Hobbs British DJ

Mary Anne Hobbs is an English DJ and music journalist from Lancashire, England. She currently hosts the BBC Radio 6 Music weekday mid-morning show, Monday to Friday, 10:30 am – 1 pm, and her 6 Music Recommends show, Wednesday night into Thursday morning, midnight – 1 am. She is also a curator of live events. In 2019 she created a radical live show Queens Of The Electronic Underground for Manchester International Festival and assisted David Lynch with his musical presentation at the festival, following her series of shows, "Dark Matter" at MIF 2017. She staged a BBC Prom with Nils Frahm and A Winged Victory for the Sullen in 2015, She performs as a live DJ internationally, at events such as the opening of Switch House at TATE Modern.

In 2016, in combination with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, Lakker created "a new conceptual work" which was presented as an album, an interactive digital platform, and a documentary. [6] [7] [8]

Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision audiovisual archive and museum in Hilversum

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision is the cultural archive and a museum located in Hilversum. The Institute for Sound and Vision collects, looks after, and provides access to over 70% of the Dutch audio-visual heritage. In total, the collection of more than 750,000 hours of television, radio, music and film that began in 1898 and continues to grow daily, makes Sound and Vision one of the largest audiovisual archives in Europe. It was founded in 1997 as the Netherlands Audiovisual Archive, and adopted its current name in 2002.

Performances and workshops

Lakker perform live, DJ, and present audiovisual shows in Europe and North America. This includes performances at BLOC Festival, Montreal's Mutek Festival, [9] [10] Glade Festival, Rewire Festival, and Sonica in London in 2018. [11] In addition to electronic music festivals, Lakker have presented works on Boiler Room TV in 2014, [12] 2015, [13] and 2016. [14]

Bloc Festival was an electronic music festival in England which began in 2006. It was devoted to electronic music of all genres including electro, hip hop, IDM, techno, house music, reggae, drum and bass and dubstep, and incorporated both DJ sets and live shows. It was announced in 2016 that that year's festival would be the last one.

MUTEK

MUTEK is a Montreal-based festival dedicated to the promotion of electronic music and the digital arts. Its central platform is an annual five-day event in Montreal that takes place in late August. Alongside the Montreal edition, MUTEK also hosts international versions of its festival.

In 2015 the duo presented a workshop on Ableton for live performance at Berlin's Krake Festival. [15] [16] And, in 2016 Lakker presented and discussed their "Struggle & Emerge" A/V project at the Europeana Sounds Conference in Vilnius. [17]

Holly Herndon American composer and singer-songwriter

Holly Herndon is an American composer, musician, and sound artist based in Berlin, Germany. After studying composition at Stanford University and completing her Ph.D. at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, she pursued her international career. Herndon's music often includes human singing voices—such as her own one, is primarily computer-based, and regularly uses the visual programming language Max/MSP to create custom instruments and vocal processes. She has released music on the labels RVNG Intl. and 4AD. Her most recent full-length album Proto was released on May 10, 2019.

Alexandra Cardenas is a Colombian composer and improviser now based in Berlin, who has followed a path from Western classical composition to improvisation and live electronics. Her recent work has included live coding performance, including performances at the forefront of the Algorave scene, she also co-organised a live coding community in Mexico City. At the 2014 Kurukshetra Festival Cardenas was a keynote speaker and hosted a music live coding workshop, the first of its kind in India. Cardenas has been invited to talk about and perform live coding at events such as the Berlin based Transmediale festival and the Ableton sponsored Loop symposium, and held residencies including at Tokyo Wonder Site in Japan and Centre for the Arts in Mexico City.

Kara-Lis Coverdale Canadian musician

Kara-Lis Coverdale, also known as K-LC, is a Canadian composer, musician, producer, based in Montreal, Quebec. Coverdale is known equally for her piano, organ, and keyboard work as she is for her experimental electronic projects; often her work integrates the two, blurring the lines between traditional composition and research-based modernism.

Deniz Kurtel is a Turkish installation artist and electronic musician. She specializes in creating interactive sculptures featuring LED lights and mirrors and has participated in various festivals, exhibitions, and design weeks around the globe. Starting with her debut album in 2009, “Music Watching Over Me,” she has regularly toured as a musician. Her song "The L Word" made NPR's Favorite Songs of 2011. Working both in Berlin and Brooklyn, she is in the process of further integrating her art and light installations into her live performances.

Jens Berents Christiansen aka Rumpistol is a Danish producer and musician who writes and performs electronic music. He has been releasing music since 2003 and has received positive reviews from magazines such as Intro.de De:Bug and Danish magazine GAFFA. The latter gave Rumpistol 6/6 for his 2008 album 'Dynamo'.
