Lal Haveli (The Red Bungalow) is a Bollywood film. It was released on 15 December 1944. [1] [2] The film was directed by K. B. Lall, for whom it was a debut directorial venture. Lall had started his career playing a villain in Sohrab Modi's Bharosa (1940), and as a "storywriter" with the V. C. Desai directed film Radhika (1941), finally producing Savera (1942) directed by V. C. Desai, before turning his hand at direction with Lal Haveli. [3]
The film's story was written by R. S. Chowdhury with dialogues by Wajahat Mirza and Agha Jani Kashmiri. Music was composed by Mir Saheb with lyrics by Shums Lacknowi. Faredoon Irani was the chief cinematographer. The cast included Noor Jehan, Surendra, Yakub , Kanhaiyalal, Ulhas, Vatsala Kumtekar and Baby Meena Kumari playing the role of the younger Noor Jehan. The film is set in Northern India, and involves a feudal patriarch, who though facing monetary problems continues a pretense of the old days. His older daughter elopes with a soldier and the younger daughter is in love with the son of an ex-soldier living in the village.
The aristocratic Thakur (Badri Prasad), lives in the Lal Haveli (Red Mansion) with his younger daughter Mukta (Noor Jehan). The Thakur's honour has taken a tragic hit when his older daughter, Lal Kunwar elopes with a common soldier. Though the house is run in the old lavish manner, there is shortage of funds, with the mansion being mortgaged to an old Rajput friend, Lacchman Singh.
Mukta and Anand (Surendra) have been childhood friends, who fall in love when they grow up and vow to marry. Anand is the unemployed son of an ex-soldier and a near neighbour of Mukta. Manglu (Yakub), a rough-neck but street smart, is a close friend of Anand and the two are always together, and helpful to each other.
Thakur asks Mukta to attend the wedding of Lachhman Singh's daughter in the city. There she meets the suave Jawahar, Lachhman's son, who falls in love with her and wants to marry her. Her father is pleased with the idea, especially since he's in debt to Lachhman. Mukta agrees to the pleas of her ailing father. Jawahar comes for a visit to the Thakur's house and Anand in a jealous rage shoots at him, wounding him grievously. Manglu and Anand then leave the village and join the army from where they are sent to war.
The injured Jawahar requires blood transfusion to save his life. Mukta's blood matches and she is able to help Jawahar by donating her blood. At the marriage ceremony, the Pandit (priest) (Kanhaiyalal), stops the wedding saying that since Mukta's blood runs in Jawahar’s body, they are now brother and sister. This reasoning appeals to the old-fashioned Thakur, who calls off the wedding. Anand receives an injury during the war and is sent home from the army. Manglu too comes back bringing a nurse he met in the hospital as his bride. Finally, Jawahar, after some initial resistance accepts Mukta as his sister and gives her hand in marriage to Anand.
Lal Haveli was released on 15 December 1944, at the Capitol cinema, Bombay. The film's review described it as "Dull And Bright -Yet Entertaining", the direction was stated to be "good in bits" but with "poor production values". The music, composed by Mir Saheb was "good throughout". Among the actors, Yakub and Kanhaiyalal were commended with "easily beat the others" in acting. The over-all comment was "Lal Haveli continues to entertain throughout its length because the basic plot has some natural suspense in it". [4]
Lal Haveli is counted as actor Surendra's one of top "three superhits", the other two being Bharthari (1944) and Anmol Ghadi (1946). [5] For Yakub, who was stated to be a "most forbidding screen villain" and therefore a "much-in-demand" actor for villain roles, the film was a popular shift to non-villainous comedy role. [5] [6] [7] The success of the film, called a "runaway hit" was attributed to the comedy element largely infused in the story by Yakub playing the role of Surendra's friend. The chemistry between the two actors was appreciated by the audiences, especially in scenes where they tease the Pandit, played by Kanhaiyalal.
Music was composed by Mir Saheb with lyrics written by Shums Lucknowi. One of the notable songs was "Teri Yaad Aayi" sung by Noor Jehan. [8] Surendra and Noor Jehan had a couple of "memorable" duets "Dil Leke Mukar Na Jaana" and "Mohania Sundar Mukhra Khol". The singers were Noor Jehan, Surendra, and C. Ramchandra. One of the songs in Noor Jehan's voice, "Aao Mere Pyaare Sanwariya" was composed by C. Ramchandra who was then assisting Mir Saheb in music direction. It's the only song credited to have been recorded between composer Ramchandra and Noor Jehan. [9]

Aurat, also known by its English title Woman, is a 1940 Indian film directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Sardar Akhtar, Surendra, Yakub, Kanhaiyalal and Arun Kumar Ahuja. The film's music is by Anil Biswas and dialogue is by Wajahat Mirza. Mehboob Khan later remade this film as Mother India (1957), which is considered one of the biggest hits of all time in Indian Cinema.
Patanga is a 1949 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film. It was the first film produced and distributed by Varma Films; yet, it was the seventh highest grossing Indian film of 1949. The film was directed by H. S. Rawail based on a story written by his wife Anjana Rawail. Rajendra Kumar, who would become one of the leading actors in Indian cinema, worked in Patanga as an assistant to director H.S. Rawail and also had a cameo in the film. A duet sung against the backdrop of WW2, "Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon", picturised on actor Gope and lead heroine Nigar Sultana became popular. The playback singers for the song were C. Ramchandra, who also composed the music for the film, and Shamshad Begum. The cast included Nigar Sultana, Shyam, Yakub, Gope, Purnima, Shyama, Randhir and Mohana.
Kanhaiyalal was an Indian actor who acted in 122 films in his career, primarily in Hindi films produced in Bollywood, the Mumbai-based film industry.
Musafir is a 1940 social Hindi language film directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. Produced by Ranjit Studios, the music was by Gyan Dutt and it starred Noor Mohammed Charlie, Khursheed, Ishwarlal and Yakub.

Gope was an Indian actor of Hindi cinema. Starting his career with a small role in Insaan Ya Shaitaan (1933), directed by Moti Gidwani and produced by Eastern Arts Production, Gope went on to act in over one hundred forty films in a career spanning twenty-four years from 1933 to 1957. Several of his films were released following his death. Best known for his comedy roles, he is stated to be one of Hindi cinema's "most popular comedians". His acting in comic roles won him "critical and popular acclaim" and he soon became "the leading comedian of his time". His popularity assured him of being mentioned in the credit roll of films along with the main cast. He became famous for lip-syncing the popular number "Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon" from Patanga, playbacked by C. Ramchandra for Gope and by Shamshad Begum for Nigar Sultana.
Jayant Desai was an Indian film director and producer. After graduating from the University of Bombay Desai joined Ranjit Studios in 1929 where he directed numerous films including Toofani Toli (1937), Tansen (1943), Har Har Mahadev (1950) and Amber (1952). Tansen was the second highest grossing Indian film of 1943. Besides film direction he also acted in several films. In 1943 he left Ranjit Studios to found his own production company, Jayant Desai Productions. In 1960s he founded Jupiter Films and Hemlata Pictures.
Noor Mohammed Charlie, popularly known as Charlie, was an Indian/ Pakistani actor born in 1911 in Ranavav village, Porbandar, Saurashtra, British India. Best known for his comedy roles, he was the first 'star' comedian and has been referred to as India's first comedy king. He acted with several top actresses of the day as a comic hero. Being a great fan of Charlie Chaplin, he took "Charlie" as his screen name following the release of his popular film The Indian Charlie (1933). He had a successful career in pre-partition India from 1925–1946. His shift to Pakistan following partition saw his career going down with less than 12 films. He shifted to the US to live with his son and returned later to Pakistan where he died in 1983.
Sajani is a 1940 Hindi social film directed by Sarvottam Badami for Sudama Productions. Scripted by Zia Sarhadi, the film had music by Gyan Dutt and starred Prithviraj Kapoor, Sabita Devi, Snehprabha Pradhan, Noor Jehan, Dixit, and Ghory. Badami left Sagar Movietone where he had made satirical comedies to join his "mentor" Ambalal Patel at Sudama Productions to make "socially relevant film(s)", where Sajani was one of the first. Snehprabha Pradhan acted in several films produced by Chimanbhai Desai in 1940, including Sajani.
The Secretary is a 1938 Hindi-language Indian comedy film directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The film was produced by Chandulal Shah under the Ranjit Pictures banner. The music was provided by Gyan Dutt with lyrics by Pyare Lal Santoshi. The main cast was Noor Mohammed Charlie, Trilok Kapoor, Madhuri, Kalyani Das, Waheedan Bai and Rajkumari.
Kunwara Baap is a 1942 Hindi comedy film directed by Kishore Sahu. The film was the directorial debut for Sahu, and N. R. Acharya's debut as a director. Acharya had just started his production company Acharya Arts Productions. The story was written by Kishore Sahu who went on to write and direct films like Kali Ghata, Mayurpankh and others. The music direction was by Ramchandra Pal. The film had Kishore Sahu starring as the bachelor father with co-stars Protima Dasgupta, Anjali Devi, Nana Palsikar, Amritlal Nagar and Moni Chatterjee.
Thokar also called The Kick is a 1939 Indian Hindi-Urdu film directed by A. R. Kardar. Produced by Chandulal Shah for his production banner Ranjit Movietone, it has music by Gyan Dutt. The story writer was M. Sadiq, with cinematography by Gordhanbhi Patel. The cast included Kumar, Ishwarlal, Madhuri, Yakub, Noor Mohammed Charlie, Ram Marathe, Waheedan Bai and Dixit. The story involves a blind villager winning a lottery but he eventually realises that money can not bring happiness.
Baap Re Baap is a 1955 Hindi family comedy drama film, produced and directed by A. R. Kardar. Produced under the Kardar Productions banner, it had dialogues by S. N. Bannerjee and Jagdish Kanwal. The music of the film was composed by O. P. Nayyar, with the lyrics written by Jan Nisar Akhtar.
Surendra was an Indian singer-actor of Hindi films. Known by his mononym, Surendra was born and educated in Punjab to be a lawyer by profession. He came to Bombay to become a singer on the recommendation of a Delhi distributor and his friends. He was "picked" by Mehboob Khan whom he met at Sagar Movietone, to sing and act in films as an alternative to the then Calcutta-based singer-actor, K. L. Saigal. Surendra started his career with his debut starring role in Deccan Queen (1936), directed by Mehboob Khan. He soon became a part of Sagar Movietone when his song "Birha Ki Aag Lagi More Man Mein" from the film became an "instant hit".
Bibbo was a music composer, singer and actress who worked in both Indian and Pakistani films. She acted in Indian cinema from 1931 to 1947 before moving to Pakistan, following Partition of India in 1947. She started her acting career with Ajanta Cinetone Ltd. in 1933, working with directors like M. D. Bhavnani and A. P. Kapoor. She was one of the top leading ladies of the 1930s along with actresses like Devika Rani, Durga Khote, Sulochana, Mehtab, Shanta Apte, Sabita Devi, Leela Desai and Naseem Banu. She was referred to as "one of the most important female stars of the 1930s and 1940s". Her fame had her featured in the lyrics of a popular song from the film Gharib Ke Lal (1939) sung by Mirza Musharraf and Kamla Karnataki, with music by Sagheer Asif and lyrics by Rafi Kashmiri. "Tujhe Bibbo Kahoon Ke Sulochana", where Sulochana referred to another popular actress of the time. This was the first time a song featuring famous actors was used in the lyrics of a film song.
Jhamela is a 1953 Hindi comedy thriller film produced and directed by Bhagwan, for his Bhagwan Art Productions. The film was a repeat formula Bhagwan had earlier used in his commercially successful film Albela (1951). Albela with its "rumba-samba beats" in the composition of music director C. Ramchandra's songs, its comedy, and melodramatic story, had turned out to be an "all-time hit". With music again composed by C. Ramachandra, and casting actress Geeta Bali, Bhagwan tried to recreate the magic of Albela with little success. The film was termed a "semi-hit" at the box-office. It starred Geeta Bali, Bhagwan, Shakuntala, Sunder, Anwar Hussain and Badri Prasad.
Karan Dewan was an Indian cinema actor in Hindi films. He worked in over seventy films from 1941 to 1979. He started as a journalist while still in college, editing a film-based magazine in Urdu. His brother was the film producer and director Jaimani Dewan.
Meena Shorey was a Pakistani film actress who worked first in Indian cinema and later Pakistani cinema. She appeared in Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi films. Credited in films by her mononym, Meena, her real name was Khurshid Jehan. She started her acting career playing a character role, as Ambhi, Raja of Taxila's sister in Sohrab Modi's Sikandar (1941). Married to her fourth husband, Roop K. Shorey, by the mid-1940s, she found fame when she acted in her husband's film Ek Thi Larki (1949), opposite actor Motilal. The story was written by I. S. Johar, who also starred in the film. The "foot-tapping" music composed by Vinod became a "huge hit", with Meena becoming an "icon" for the "new liberated" young women. Meena was acclaimed as the "Lara Lappa Girl", from the song of same title in the film. She was one of the first women to be recognised in Indian cinema as a "comedienne of calibre". She was also popularly known as The Droll Queen of Partition as she worked as a comedienne [Droll] in both in India and Pakistan [countries resulting from partition].
Chaturbhuj Doshi (1894–1969) was a Hindi and Gujarati writer-director of Indian cinema. He was one of the top Gujarati screenplay writers, who helped script stories for the Punatar productions. He is stated to be one of the leading figures who launched the Gujarati film industry with work on notable films like Gunsundari (1948) and Nanand Bhojai (1948). Doshi, was “well known” for his family socials and had become “a celebrity in his own right”. He made a name for himself as a journalist initially and was referred to as the "famous journalist" and publicist by Baburao Patel, editor of Filmindia.
Sagar Movietone also Sagar Films, Sagar Film Company and Sagar Productions was an Indian film production company involved in the making of films for Indian cinema. It was launched by Ardeshir Irani with Chimanlal Desai and Dr. Ambalal Patel in 1929 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Sagar was initially started as a branch company of Ardeshir's Imperial Film Company. Several key figures from Imperial, such as Mehboob Khan were shifted to Sagar. The studio was in operation from 1930 to 1939. In 1940, it combined with General Pictures to form National Studios. It made "Parsi theatre based films, mythologicals and stunt movies". Sagar fostered the career of many artists who rose to prominence. Early directors such as Prafulla Ghosh, Sarvottam Badami, Ezra Mir and Nanubhai Vakil were promoted by the company. Mehboob Khan got his first break as a director in Al Hilal in 1935. He was referred to as "the most important alumnus" from Sagar, who went on to become one of Indian cinema's "most influential film-makers".
