Lalgudi Rajalakshmi is a violinist in the Indian classical Carnatic style of music. She performs the violin in the Lalgudi tradition.
Lalgudi Rajalakshmi hails from a family of musicians. Her siblings are veena maestro Padmavathi Ananthagopalan, and violinists Lalgudi Jayaraman and Srimathi Brahmanandam. Her initial training was with her father, Lalgudi Gopala Iyer. She also learnt later from her elder brother, Lalgudi Jayaraman. [1] [2] [3]
Lalgudi Rajalakshmi started performing at the age of 10. Since that time, she has had both solo performances and performed as an accompanist to several artistes including Aruna Sairam, D.K. Pattammal, Mandolin Srinivas, Mani Krishnaswami, M.L. Vasanthakumari, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, N. Ramani, Radha and Jayalakshmi, Saroja and Lalitha, Sudha Raghunathan, her daughter Jayanthi Kumaresh and grandson Abhishek Raghuram, among others. She has performed in India and in several other countries including Malaysia, Singapore and the US. Lalgudi Rajalakshmi has also served as a staff artiste for All India Radio. [4]
The awards conferred upon Rajalakshmi include "Kala Jyothi" by Sri Thyagaraja Bhajana Sabha, "Sangeetha Bhushana" by Ramakrishna Bhajana Sabha, "Swarabhushani" by Gayana Samaja (2013) and the Music Academy's prestigious Pappa Venkatramaiah award (2015). [5]
A highly regarded teacher,[ according to whom? ] Lalgudi Rajalakshmi has trained students in the violin, veena and in vocal music. [6] Her students include the veena artiste Jayanthi Kumaresh.
Lalgudi Gopala Jayaraman was an Indian Carnatic violinist, vocalist and composer. He is commonly grouped with M.S. Gopalakrishnan and T.N.Krishnan as part of the violin-trinity of Carnatic Music. He was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2001.

In December 2023, she was awarded the most prestigious award in the Carnatic Music Field, the Sangeetha Kalanidhi, by the Madras Music Academy. She was nominated for Academy Award for Best Original Song (Oscar) for Pi's Lullaby from Life of Pi movie. She has become one of the most sought-after Carnatic musicians today.
Sangita Kalanidhi Aruna Sairam is an Indian classical vocalist and carnatic music singer. She is a recipient of the Padma Shri award from the Government of India and was elected as the Vice Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Academy by the Government of India until 2022. In 2011, Aruna was the first Carnatic musician to perform at the BBC proms in London. She is also the first Carnatic musician to perform in Oud Festival of Israel (Jerusalem).
Lalgudi Gopala Jayaraman Radhakrishnan, popularly known as G. J. R. Krishnan or Lalgudi Krishnan, is a Carnatic violinist, vocalist and composer. He is the son and disciple of the legendary maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. Over the years, Krishnan has nurtured and propagated the legacy of the Lalgudi Bani, while also blending his own artistic elements. His style is defined by technique, bhava, laya, and a philosophical adherence to the notion that the violin must closely mimic the human voice. Lalgudi Krishnan was awarded with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2015. This is the highest Indian recognition given to people in the field of performing arts. Along with his sister, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, the duo was honored with the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award from the Madras Music Academy in 2022. This is considered the highest accolade in the field of Carnatic music.
