The Lanz HL, also known as Lanz Bulldog HL and Lanz Bulldog HL 12, is an agricultural machine and tractor made by Heinrich Lanz & Co. OHG. It was developed by German engineer Fritz Huber and is the first Lanz tractor to feature the "Bulldog" Akroyd engine. Thus, it is the first series production Lanz Bulldog. The Lanz HL was introduced at the 1921 DLG agriculture fair in Leipzig and stayed in production until 1927. [1] In total, more than 6,000 units were made. [2] The HL Bulldog engine was also sold as a stationary engine; [1] this article primarily describes the HL agricultural tractor.

Technical description

The Lanz HL is an agricultural machine that resembles, in its default configuration, an agricultural tractor. Nonetheless, the Lanz HL was not primarily designed as a tractor; it is rather a self-propelled farm implement motor. Various different versions were made, with rubber or steel wheels. [3] It uses a frameless design with the rear axle flange-mounted to a housing shaped like a "hull" that spans to the tractor's front. This "hull" contains the water tank for the cooling system and a toolbox. [4] The rear axle is a live 90°-portal-type beam axle with a single-speed reduction gearbox and a differential gearbox; the front axle – that the "hull"-shaped housing sits atop on – is a dead boogie axle that does not have steering knuckles. The Lanz HL has a worm-and-sector steering system and a conventional steering wheel. The engine is top flange-mounted to the "hull". Torque is sent to a pulley and torque take-off disc that can be engaged or disengaged through a simple lever-operated jaw-type clutch. From the pulley and torque take-off disc, torque can either be sent to a farm implement through a belt, or to the rear axle's reduction gearbox through a chain. This means that the drive chain has to be uninstalled when the Lanz HL is to be used as a farm implement motor. In its original configuration, the Lanz HL has no gearboxes other than the rear axle's reduction and differential gearboxes, which limits its top speed to 4.2 km/h. From 1923, Lanz offered an additional shiftable gearbox as a factory option. This gearbox has two speeds and has to be shifted while the vehicle is standing still. Due to the engine's design, it can run either clockwise or counterclockwise, which eliminates the need for a dedicated reverse gear or reverse gearbox. [5] With the two-speed gearbox, speeds of up to 12 km/h, either forward or reverse, are possible. The brakes are simple shoe brakes that act directly on the wheels' treads.

The engine is a single-cylinder, two-stroke Akroyd engine designed by German engineer Fritz Huber (hence the name "HL", Huber Lanz). It is named the "Bulldog" engine because of its ignition device's characteristic appearance that bears resemblance to a bulldog. [6] The Bulldog engine of the HL has intake ports instead of valves and uses simple evaporative cooling. The water vapour leaves the engine through the exhaust of the engine. [4] With its bore of 190 mm and its stroke of 220 mm it displaces 6238 cm³. The rated power output is 12 PS (ca. 9 kW) at 420/min. Later versions of the same engine were also offered with 15 PS (ca. 11 kW) at 500/min for stationary applications. The Bulldog engine can burn a huge variety of liquid fuels, most notably cheap fuel oils. [7] The fuel is sprayed into the ignition device – an uncooled portion of the cylinder head – where it vapourises and eventually gradually combusts. Thus, the engine needs no carburetor like Otto engines, and no high compression like Diesel engines (in the Bulldog engine, the compression is ε≤5). Prior to starting the engine, the ignition device has to be brought to ignition temperature using a blow torch. The engine is then flywheel-started by hand. [8]

It is based on the trac design principle for tractors and shares its drivetrain with the Unimog. Mercedes-Benz offered the MB-trac in light duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty versions in four different type series: 440, 441, 442, and 443. About 41,000 MB-tracs were made by former Daimler-Benz, before the manufacture was sold to Werner Forsttechnik in the early 1990s, who developed the WF trac skidder from the MB-trac.

Eicher tractor was a manufacturer of tractors, agricultural machinery and engines. The company was founded in 1936 by the brothers Josef and Albert Eicher in the Upper Bavaria town of Forstern. The brand name "Eicher" was last used in Europe in 2009 by the Dutch agricultural machinery dealer Hissink & Zonen and is still in use today in India by Eicher Motors, which manufactures tractors & commercial vehicles by this name.

The Lanz Bulldog was a series of tractors manufactured by Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Production started in 1921 with the Lanz HL, and various versions of the Bulldog were produced up to 1960, one of them being the Lanz Bulldog D 9506. John Deere purchased Lanz in 1956 and started using the name "John Deere Lanz" for the Lanz product line. A few years after the Bulldog was discontinued the Lanz name fell into disuse. The Lanz Bulldog was one of the most popular German tractors, with over 220,000 of them produced in its long production life. The name "Bulldog" is widely used in Germany as a synonym for tractors even today, especially in Bavaria.

ZT 300 is a series of 20 kN agricultural tractors, produced from 1 September 1967 to 1984 by the VEB Traktorenwerk Schönebeck. It succeeded the RS14 Famulus series, and unlike the Famulus, the ZT 300 series was sold under the brand name Fortschritt ("Progress"). ZT 300 refers both to the initial ZT 300 model, and the ZT 300 series. In total, 72,382 units of the ZT 300 series were made. The model with the highest production figure was the ZT 303, which was introduced in 1972. It features an automatic all-wheel-drive system; in the early 1980s, it cost 81,000 Mark. Starting in 1983, the ZT 300 series was succeeded by the ZT 320.

The Unimog 406 is a vehicle of the Unimog-series by Mercedes-Benz. A total of 37,069 units were manufactured by the Daimler-Benz AG in the Unimog plant in Gaggenau from 1963 to 1989. The 406 was the first medium duty Unimog, having a larger wheelbase of 2380 mm and more than twice the engine power of the Unimog 401. Unlike the initial Unimog, the 406 does not have a car engine but a heavy duty truck engine instead. Several following Unimog versions were based on the 406. There were eleven different types made of the Unimog 406, which were available in four models with a closed two-door or four-door cab, as Cabrio and as an OEM part. During its long production period, the 406 received several technical refinements. In 1964, the precombustion chamber diesel engine OM 312 was replaced with the direct injected OM 352. Disc brakes followed in 1973. For many enthusiasts, the Unimog 406 represents the classical Unimog, having agricultural and silvicultural applications. It was successful and the best embodiment of the word Universal-Motor-Gerät considering all prior Unimogs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Unimog 70200</span> German tractor

The Unimog 70200 is the first series production model of the Unimog series, made by Gebr. Boehringer. It was manufactured in Boehringer's Göppingen plant from June 1948 to April 1951. In total, 600 units of the 70200 were made. Manufacture of the Unimog was sold to Daimler-Benz in October 1950, where it was modified for mass production. The mass-production optimised Unimog is known as Unimog 2010.

Fortschritt ZT 320 is a series of agricultural tractors made by the East German manufacturer VEB Traktorenwerk Schönebeck. It was produced from 1983 to 1990, and succeeded the ZT 300 series. Unlike its predecessor, the ZT 320 series came in only two models, the rear-wheel drive ZT 320, and the all-wheel drive ZT 323.

It was available in long wheelbase lorry (H6), and short wheelbase tractor (H6Z) versions. Approximately 7,500 were built from 1952 to 1959. The bus IFA H6B was based upon IFA H6 components. For political reasons, there were no successors to the H6. Such had been developed, but production of the smaller IFA S 4000-1 commenced at IFA's Werdau plant instead.

The Unimog 425 is the first series production heavy duty Unimog series, made by Daimler-Benz from 1975 to 1988 in the Mercedes-Benz Gaggenau plant, alongside the long-wheelbase model Unimog 435. It was first presented to the public on the 1974 DLG show in Frankfurt, then named Unimog U 120, indicating a power output of 120 PS. However, series production models were equipped with 125 PS or 150 PS engines, and therefore called U 1300 and U 1500. Daimler-Benz made three types of the Unimog 425, and a total number of 3135 were built, making the 425 much rarer compared to the longer wheelbase, but otherwise similar Unimog 435, of which more than 30,000 were built. The 425 was the first Unimog to feature the "edgy cab", which is still used in the Unimog today.

The MAN 630 is a five-tonne lorry, made by German manufacturer Maschinenfabrik Augsburg Nürnberg, from 1953 until 1972. It was made in three major variants, the civilian L1, the military L2, and the civilian L3, with L being an abbreviation for the German word for Lorry, Lastkraftwagen. The military L2 versions were by far the most common MAN 630s. The Porsche-Diesel 419 is an agricultural tractor made by Porsche-Diesel Motorenbau, and part of Porsche's Master series. It was the biggest and most powerful series-production tractor ever sold under the Porsche brand. In total, 1175 units were produced from 1960 until 1963. The 419 was preceded by the 418, and had no successor, since Porsche-Diesel Motorenbau stopped producing tractors in 1963. That same year, the catalogue price for a Porsche-Diesel 419 was DM 15,290.

The Unimog 405 is a vehicle of the Unimog-series by Mercedes-Benz, made by Daimler Truck Holding AG. Developed in the 1990s, the Unimog 405 has been in production since 2000. Originally, DaimlerChrysler produced the Unimog at Gaggenau; in 2002, production was moved to Wörth am Rhein. The Unimog 405 is the implement carrier version of the Unimog and the successor to most previous Unimogs. Although retaining many characteristics typical of the Unimog, the 405's axle and chassis design concept with control arms instead of torque tubes marks a "paradigmatic change" in Unimog design.
