Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) is a Brazilian literary non-profit society established at the end of the 19th century. The first president, Machado de Assis, declared its foundation on December 15, 1896, with the by-laws being passed on January 28, 1897. On July 20 of the same year, the academy started its operation.

Toca da Boa Vista (BA-082) is the longest known cave in the Southern hemisphere. It is located within the municipality of Campo Formoso, 11 km east of the town of Lage dos Negros, in the State of Bahia, Brazil. As of 2007 it had over 120 km of mapped passages, which makes it the 13th longest cave in the world. Continued exploration faces typical temperatures of up to 30 Cº.
Alfredo Bosi was a Brazilian historian, literary critic, and professor. He was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, occupying Chair number 12. One of his most famous books is História Concisa da Literatura Brasileira, widely used in Brazilian universities in literature courses. Bosi also wrote several studies about Italian literature and about major Brazilian writers as well as essays on the field of hermeneutics.
Paulo Costa Lima is a Brazilian composer and music theorist, a member of the Brazilian Academy of Music, whose main interest has been the vivid interaction between composition and culture, including the political aspects of it, namely, composition as a way of resisting colonization, against the "waste of experience" - the traditional circuit in which ideas (theory) are produced elsewhere and absorbed by the South. Born in Salvador-Bahia in 1954, he has always cultivated an interest in Afro-Brazilian musical heritage. He is also a member of the Academia de Letras da Bahia, a founder-member of the Academia de Ciências da Bahia and a recognized researcher by the CNPq, the National Council for Research. In 2015 he was indicated as first prize winner of the Bienal de Música Brasileira Contemporânea, after a consultation involving 120 Brazilian composers and conductors. He has published books and articles on subjects such as the theory and pedagogy of musical composition, analysis and history of Brazilian contemporary music, analysis of Brazilian popular songs, and the possible dialogue between music, psychoanalysis and cultural semantics. His works have received more than 500 performances in more than 20 countries in important concert halls such as Konzerthaus Berlin, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Benaroya Hall, De Rode Pomp, Sala Cecilia Meireles, Sala São Paulo, Teatro Castro Alves and Reitoria da UFBA. In 2001 The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians included an article dedicated to his work, written by Gerard Béhague. He has received along the last decades more than twenty prizes and commissions.

With a PhD in African Languages at the National University of Zaire, she is a Technical Consultant in African Languages for the Museu da Língua Portuguesa at the Estação da Luz in São Paulo, a Member of the Academia de Letras da Bahia and of the ANPOLL's GT de Literatura Oral e Popular. Also is a Permanent Member of the Brazilian Scientific Committee of the Project "Slave Route" by UNESCO.
The Academia Pernambucana de Letras is a Brazilian literary society established in the manner of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, on January 26, 1901, in Recife by Carneiro Vilela and other writers from the state of Pernambuco, with a total of 20 seats. One of the first letters academies of Brazil, being surpassed only by Academia Cearense de Letras, by Academia Brasileira de Letras and Academia Paraense de Letras.
Toca da Barriguda (BA-0250) is a dolomite cave located in the municipality of Campo Formoso, in the State of Bahia. It measures 35,000 meters long and 61 meters deep, and is now considered a branch of the Toca da Boa Vista cave, being the second-longest in South America. The Coarazuphium formoso, a recently described a troglobite species of beetle found in the Barriguda cave.

Murilo Melo Filho was a Brazilian author, journalist and politician. He was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, an elite group of 40 writers and poets similar to France's Académie Française, occupying Chair no 20, in succession to Aurélio de Lira Tavares. He was also a member of the regional Academia Norte-Riograndense de Letras, occupying Chair no 19. He was a member of the administrative council of the Associação Brasileira de Imprensa
