Larry Cohler-Esses is an American journalist and political writer. He has worked for the Jewish magazine the Forward. [1] He is married to Dianne Cohler-Esses. [2]
He joined the staff of the Forward in December 2008. Previously, he served as Editor-at-Large for the Jewish Week, an investigative reporter for the New York Daily News, and as a staff writer for the Jewish Week as well as the Washington Jewish Week. He has written extensively on the Arab-Jewish relations both in the United States and the Middle East. [1] [3] [4] [5] Cohler-Esses is a founding board member of Shtetl , a media outlet covering the Haredi Jewish community that launched in 2023. [6]
In August 2015, The Forward received wide attention for reporting from Iran [7] [8] [9] at a charged moment in American politics, as the U.S. Congress was ramping up to a vote on an accord reached the month before to limit Tehran's nuclear ability in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions. Larry Cohler-Esses was, in the words of The New York Times, "The first journalist from an American Jewish pro-Israel publication to be given an Iranian visa since 1979". [10]
He received several Laurels Awards from the Columbia Journalism Review, and two New York Press Association awards. The subject along with Lili Bayer won the Society of Professional Journalists 2018 Phi Sigma Chi award for non-daily investigative reporting on former White House anti-terrorism aide, Sebastian Gorka. Haredi Judaism is a branch of Orthodox Judaism that is characterized by its strict interpretation of religious sources and its accepted halakha and traditions, in opposition to more accommodating or modern values and practices. Its members are usually referred to as ultra-Orthodox in English; a term considered pejorative by many of its adherents, who prefer the terms strictly Orthodox or Haredi. Haredim regard themselves as the most authentic custodians of Jewish religious law and tradition which, in their opinion, is binding and unchangeable. They consider all other expressions of Judaism, including Modern Orthodoxy, as deviations from God's laws, although other movements of Judaism would disagree.

Founded in 1897 as a Yiddish-language daily socialist newspaper, The New York Times reported that Seth Lipsky "started an English-language offshoot of the Yiddish-language newspaper" as a weekly newspaper in 1990.

The response of the Haredi Jewish community in Brooklyn, New York City, to allegations of sexual abuse against its spiritual leaders has drawn scrutiny from inside and outside the Jewish community. In 2012, the Jewish community organization Romemu chose her as its new education director.
