Major General Lars-Bertil Persson (born 19 November 1934) is a retired Swedish Air Force officer. He served as wing commander of the Norrbotten Wing (F 21), as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, and as Director General of the National Aeronautical Research Institute.

Early life

Persson was born on 19 November 1934 in Lund City Parish, Malmöhus County, Sweden,^[1] the son of Ernfrid Persson and his wife Lilly (née Fransson).^[2]

Career

Persson was commissioned as an officer in the Swedish Air Force in 1956 and attended the Empire Test Pilots' School in England in 1959. He then served as a test pilot at the Swedish Center for Experimental Research (Försökscentralen, FC) at Malmen Airbase in Malmslätt from 1960 to 1968 and as a staff officer in the Defence Staff from 1968 to 1972. Persson was head of the Planning Department in the Defence Staff from 1973 to 1977 when he was promoted to colonel and appointed section chief in the Defence Staff. In 1980, Persson was promoted to senior colonel and was appointed wing commander of the Norrbotten Wing (F 21).^[2] On 1 October 1982, he was promoted to major general and was appointed head of the Planning Staff in the Defence Staff.^[3] Persson also served as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff from 1982.^[4]

Persson was then director general and head of the National Aeronautical Research Institute from 1986 to 1996, and chairman of the Group for Aeronautical Research and Technology in Europe (GARTEUR) from 1996.^[2] He was also chairman of the Swedish Cruising Association (Svenska kryssarklubben) from 1983.^[5]

Personal life

In 1960, he married Eiwor Haglund (born 1936), the daughter of Eric Haglund and Astrid (née Carlsson).^[2]

Lieutenant General Arne Herman Mohlin was a Swedish Army officer. Mohlin served as Chief of the Army Staff and the General Staff Corps from 1961 to 1963 and he was commanding officer of the VI Military District/Upper Norrland Military District from 1963 to 1972. Mohlin is also famous for being one of two survivors of SS Hansa which was torpedoed in 1944 which killed 84 people.

Lieutenant General Bo Lars Axel Westin was a Swedish Coastal Artillery officer. Westin was Chief of the Naval Staff from 1968 to 1970 and Chief of the Defence Staff from 1970 to 1972.

Lieutenant General Torsten Reinhold Engberg was a senior Swedish Coastal Artillery officer. Engberg was Chief of the Naval Staff from 1984 to 1987 and Chief of the Defence Staff from 1987 to 1991 as well as military commander of the Middle Military District from 1991 to 1994. He also served as the first director general of the Swedish Fortifications Agency from 1994 to 1999.

Major General Åke Mangård was a Swedish Air Force officer. His senior commands include commanding officer of the Göta Wing from 1959 to 1960, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff from 1960 to 1961 and commanding officer of the Fourth Air Group from 1964 to 1966. After retiring from the military in 1966, Mangård worked for North American Aviation in Los Angeles and for SKF in Gothenburg, Tokyo and Madrid. He settled in Madrid where he lived until his death in 1998.

Lieutenant General Per-Ove Poul Ljung was a Swedish Army officer. His senior commands include Chief of the Army Staff and the General Staff Corps, Master-General of the Ordnance, head of the Royal Swedish Army Materiel Administration, military commander of the Eastern Military District and Commandant General in Stockholm. Ljung retired from the military in 1974 and then served as Director General of the Defence Materiel Administration from 1974 to 1982.

Major General Karl Gottfrid Björck was a Swedish Army officer. He served as Inspector of the Swedish Army Service Troops from 1946 to 1949, and as such, was chief of transportation of the White Buses operation to rescue concentration camp inmates in areas under Nazi control and transport them to Sweden.

Lieutenant General Bengt Anders Lehander was a Swedish Air Force officer. His senior commands include wing commander of the Skaraborg Wing, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, military commander of the Eastern Military District and Commandant General in Stockholm.
