The Latvian Museum of Photography is the only memory institution in Latvia dedicated to the medium of photography. The museum offers a full range of research opportunities, including the collection, archives and library.

In 1993, the museum was opened as a division of the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation in an old Riga merchant's house at 8 Marstalu Street.On 18 May 1993, the permanent exhibition "The History of Latvian Photography. 1839-1941" was opened to the public, presenting the stages of the development of Latvian photography in chronological order. The author of the exhibition was Pēteris Korsaks, and the first head of the museum was Vilnis Auziņš.

At the end of 2023, the museum moved to temporary premises at Kronvalda Boulevard 4. A public space has been created there, which is being developed as an area for learning, research and discussion about photography in Latvia. [1]

The Latvian Museum of Photography's collection includes nearly 70 000 items - glass plates, film negatives, slides and photographs, as well as postcards, albums and photographic equipment. The Museum's objects are organised in collections.

One of the largest collections in the Latvian Museum of Photography is the Strenci Photo Workshop glass plate collection (13 000 items). In 2021, this collection was included in the Latvian National Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme. The plates document life in Strenči from 1920 to 1950. The photographic workshop itself was active until around 1970, with photographers such as Dāvis Spunde, Jānis Ziemeļnieks, his sister Paulīne Kraukle and his brother Konrāds Krauklis.

The House of the Blackheads is a building situated in the old town of Riga, Latvia. The original building was erected in 1334 as a warehouse, meeting and celebration place for merchants. It was the biggest public building of Riga. From mid-15th century it was also used by Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners and foreigners in Riga. Major works were done in the early 17th century, adding most of the Mannerist ornamentation. In the 19th century some of the sculptures were made by the workshop of August Volz. The National Library of Latvia is a national cultural institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture of Latvia. Its current main building is known as the Castle of Light. The National Library of Latvia was formed in 1919 after the independent Republic of Latvia was proclaimed in 1918. The first supervisor of the Library was Jānis Misiņš, a librarian and the founder of the Latvian scientific bibliography (1862–1945). The current building was designed in 1989 by noted Latvian-American architect Gunnar Birkerts (1925–2017), who immigrated to the United States and made his career there. It was constructed in the early 21st century and opened in 2014. Today, the Library plays an important role in the development of Latvia's information society, providing Internet access to residents and supporting research and lifelong education.
