Rear Admiral (Junior Grade) Laura Janse van Vuuren is a South African Navy officer and the second woman to reach flag rank. [1]
Janse van Vuuren completed her schooling at Zwaanswyk High School in 1976 and joined the Navy in 1977. She initially entered the Navy as a non-commissioned officer and then completed the officer's course in 1979. [1]
In 2006 Janse van Vuuren was appointed as Director Equity Strategic Direction for the SANDF and promoted to rear admiral (JG). She was then appointed commandant of the South African National Defence College at Thaba Tshwane from 1 January 2011. [2] [3]
Hugo Hendrik Biermann, was a senior officer in the South African Navy. He served as Chief of the Navy from 1952 to 1972 and Chief of the South African Defence Force from 1972 until 1976, the only naval officer to have served in the post.
Lieutenant General Jurinus (Rinus) Janse van Rensburg, is a former South African military commander. He joined the South African Military Health Service in 1972 and commanded it, as Surgeon-General, from 2000 to 2005. He served as Chief of Corporate Staff from 1 August 2005 until his retirement in 2010.

The Navy Cross, post-nominal letters CN is a military decoration which was instituted by the Republic of South Africa in 1987. It was awarded to members of the South African Navy for bravery. It was discontinued in 2003, but backdated awards can still be made for acts of bravery during this period.

Anthony Neville Howell is a retired Rear Admiral of the South African Navy. After completing school at Fish Hoek High School in 1964, he joined the Navy in 1965. He trained at the Naval Gymnasium in Saldanha and Naval College. He completed a B. Mil degree at the South African Military Academy in 1968 and then volunteered for submarines. He was Communications Officer on the SAS Maria van Riebeeck, and served in SAS Emily Hobhouse as Detection and Weapons Officer, First Lieutenant. He commanded the submarine SAS Maria van Riebeeck from 1970 to 1980. From 1981 to 1983. Director Naval Personnel Plans at Naval HQ during 1986–1989. He was the Officer Commanding South African Naval College from 1989 to 1992. In 1993 he was promoted to Commodore and appointed Chief of Naval Staff Plans. In 1998 he was appointed Director Naval Acquisition before being promoted to rear admiral on 1 April 1999 with appointment as Chief Director Maritime Warfare. He retired from the Navy on 31 July 2001
