Lauren Spohrer is an American radio producer, best known for co-creating and producing the podcasts Criminal and This Is Love.

Early career and education

Spohrer got her start in radio in 2003, when she began interning for Weekend Edition Saturday on NPR. [1] After working as a producer for several NPR shows, she began a Master of Fine Arts at Columbia University. [1]

Creation of Criminal and This is Love podcasts

Spohrer, who teaches essay writing at Duke University, [2] was working as the producer of The Story with Dick Gordon, when the show was cancelled in 2013. [3] This led Spohrer and two colleagues, Phoebe Judge and Eric Mennel, to create their own podcast. [4] [5] Spohrer proposed to Judge that they create a podcast related to true crime, and they released the first episode of Criminal in January 2014. [6] [3] [7] Spohrer and Judge went on to co-create another podcast, This is Love, in 2018. [8] Spohrer and Judge have been in discussions with United Talent Agency to turn their podcasts into scripted shows. [9]

Season 1 investigated the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old student at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County. As of September 2018, episodes of seasons 1 and 2 have been downloaded over 340 million times, establishing an ongoing podcast world record.

Dirty John is an American true crime anthology television series, based on the podcast of the same name by Christopher Goffard, that premiered on November 25, 2018, on Bravo. Outside the United States, it was made available through Netflix on February 14, 2019. The series was created by Alexandra Cunningham also an executive producer alongside Richard Suckle, Charles Roven, Mark Herzog, Christopher G. Cowen, and Chris Argentieri. The series was initially given an order for two seasons. In May 2019, it was announced that the series will be moving from Bravo to USA Network, ahead of the premiere of the second season. The second season is titled Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story. A trailer for the season was released on March 25, 2020, featuring Christian Slater and Amanda Peet in the role of Betty Broderick. In April 2020, it was announced that the second season would premiere on June 2, 2020, with a sneak peek of the first episode of the second season airing on May 31, 2020.

<i>Casefile</i> Australian true crime podcast

Casefile True Crime Podcast, or simply Casefile, is an Australian crime podcast that first aired in January 2016 and is hosted by an Australian man who remains anonymous. The podcast is released on a Sunday (EST) for three consecutive weeks, with a break on the fourth week. The series deals with solved or cold criminal cases, often related to well-known murders and serial crimes. Many early episodes relate to Australian cases, although notable crimes from the UK and the US are increasingly featured, and well-known cases from other countries have also been included. Crime Writers On... is a twice weekly podcast hosted by a four-person panel consisting of American true crime authors: married couple Rebecca Lavoie and Kevin Flynn, crime noir novelist Toby Ball, and journalist and licensed investigator Lara Bricker.
