Pandit Laxmi Ganesh Tewari (born 8 September 1938) is a Hindustani vocalist from India. [1] He is an exponent of the Gwalior gharana (tradition) of vocal music. After studying with Lalmani Misra at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, he pursued education and teaching opportunities in America. At Sonoma State University since 1974, his career has combined performance, scholarship and teaching.

Early life and education

Born in 1938 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, Tewari studied at Banaras Hindu University with Lalmani Misra, Madhav Vaman Thakar, and B. R. Deodhar, earning a doctor of music degree in 1967.[ citation needed ] He moved to the United States to study at Wesleyan University, where he earned a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology in 1974.[ citation needed ]

Academic career

Tewari has been on the faculty of Sonoma State University in California since 1974.[ citation needed ] He has also made numerous recordings of his music; chief amongst them is his rendering of Sameshwari , a Raga created by Dr. Lalmani Misra to preserve the notes of Samagana of Sama Veda period.[ citation needed ] He has conducted field research in India, Turkey, Trinidad & Tobago, Thailand, Fiji, Ghana, and Zimbabwe. In addition to his books and recordings, Tewari's articles have appeared in South Asia Research, South Asia Journal, and Asian Folklore Studies.[ citation needed ]

Bharatiya Sangeet Vadya is a book (ISBN 81-263-0727-7) written by Lalmani Misra. It was published under the Lokodya Granthmala series of Bharatiya Jnanpith, New Delhi. The first edition was published in 1973, the second in 2002. The book was written in Hindi. It was described in a 1974 review in Ethnomusicology, the journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology, as "the most complete, authoritative work ever published on the history of Indian musical instruments."

Pandit Ritwik Sanyal is an Indian classical singer and the Dhrupad maestro from Varanasi. He is a retired professor and Ex Dean from the department of vocal music at the faculty of performing arts at Banaras Hindu University. On 5 April 2023, Pandit (Dr.) Ritwik Sanyal was conferred the Padma Shri award for 2023 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the revival and propagation of the Dhrupad tradition, both as an academician and performer. A recipient of the esteemed Kendriya Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2013, presented by the then Hon. President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, Pandit Ritwik Sanyal has now received the 4th highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, from President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

Laxmi Narayan Singh known professionally as Lachhu Maharaj was an Indian Tabla Player of Banaras Gharana. Maharaj was born on 16 October 1944 to Vasudev Narayan Singh. His sister is Nirmala Devi, mother of Bollywood actor Govind Arun Ahuja. He was married to the noted Kathak dancer Annapurna Mishra Singh and they had one daughter Rachna. After Annapurna's demise, he married Swiss woman Teena and they had one daughter Narayani. He had given many professional tabla performances performed all over the world. He was featured in films. He was nominated for Padma Shri but refused to accept it he felt that the appreciations of his audience was enough for him.
