Le Voyage à Alger is a 2009 film.

Synopsis

When the War of Independence ends, a widow must find a roof for her six children. Luckily, a Frenchman about to leave offers her the house he is about to vacate. But a high-placed local bureaucrat does not agree to such a gift. After losing all hope of obtaining the property due to the bias of the local authorities, she decides to go to the capital with her children to speak to the president of the Republic. Based on a true story.

Chaoui people

The Chaoui people or Shawia are an Amazigh (Berber) ethnic group in Eastern Algeria inhabiting the Aurès region which spans Batna and Khenchla, Oum El Bouaghi provinces located in and surrounded by the Aurès Mountains. They also live in provinces of Tébessa, Constantine, Setif a and other parts of Eastern Algeria coextensive with ancient Massylii of Numidia, as well as in some parts of adjacent North-Western Tunisia. They call themselves Išawiyen/Icawiyen and speak the Shawiya language. They are the second largest Tell Atlas Amazigh-speaking ethnicity, alongside Kabyles and Chenouas.

William McGuckin de Slane Irish orientalist

William McGuckin, known as Baron de Slane was an Irish orientalist. He became a French national on 31 December 1838. and held the post of the Principal Interpreter of Arabic of the French Army from 1 September 1846 until his retirement on 28 March 1872. Jules Roy was a French writer. "Prolific and polemical" Roy, born an Algerian pied noir and sent to a Roman Catholic seminary, used his experiences in the French colony and during his service in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War as inspiration for a number of his works.
