Leave The Capital is a 2017 book written by the English rock drummer and writer Paul Hanley [1] on the history of recording in Manchester. It was published by Route Publishing [2] in November 2017. Hanley was the drummer in The Fall from 1980 to 1985. He currently plays with Brix & The Extricated.
The book puts forward the argument that Manchester's unique musical heritage is directly traceable to the 1960s beat-boomers who started their own studios, namely Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart of The Mindbenders; Keith Hopwood and Derek Leckenby of Herman's Hermits. It discusses many of these artists' finest songs (including the songs Gouldman wrote for Herman's Hermits and The Hollies), as well as seminal works recorded in their respective studios, by the likes of 10cc, Brian and Michael, Buzzcocks, The Clash, Joy Division, The Smiths and The Fall themselves. Hanley's book has been warmly received. Musician and broadcaster Mike Sweeney called it "One of the best books on rock'n'roll I’ve ever read.", [4] and Record Collector noted Hanley's "passion, flair and an attention to factual detail worthy of the BBC's John Motson." [1] Simon McEwan of Q magazine concluded that the book made "a convincing – and thoroughly entertaining – case". [5]
The Fall were an English post-punk group, formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. They underwent many line-up changes, with vocalist and founder Mark E. Smith as the only constant member. The Fall's long-term musicians included drummers Paul Hanley, Simon Wolstencroft and Karl Burns; guitarists Craig Scanlon, Marc Riley, and Brix Smith; and bassist Steve Hanley, whose melodic, circular bass lines are widely credited with shaping the band's sound from early 1980s albums such as Hex Enduction Hour to the late 1990s.
10cc are a British rock band formed in Stockport in 1972. The group initially consisted of four musicians – Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme – who had written and recorded together since 1968. The group featured two songwriting teams. Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop songwriters, who created most of the band's accessible songs. Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring art and cinematically inspired writing.
Manchester's music scene produced successful bands in the 1960s including the Hollies, the Bee Gees and Herman's Hermits. After the punk rock era, Manchester produced popular bands including Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths and Simply Red. In the late 1980s, the ecstasy-fuelled dance club scene played a part in the rise of Madchester with bands like the Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets and Happy Mondays. In the 1990s, Manchester saw the rise of Britpop bands, notably Oasis.

Eric Michael Stewart is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer, best known as a founding member of the rock groups the Mindbenders with whom he played from 1963 to 1968, and likewise of 10cc from 1972 to 1995. Stewart co-owned Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England, from 1968 to the early 1980s, where he recorded albums with 10cc and artists including Neil Sedaka and Paul McCartney. Stewart collaborated with McCartney extensively in the 1980s, playing on or co-writing songs for McCartney's solo albums Tug of War (1982), Pipes of Peace (1983), Give My Regards to Broad Street (1984), and Press to Play (1986). Since 1980, Stewart has released four solo studio albums.
Perverted by Language is the sixth studio album by English post-punk group The Fall, released in December 1983 on Rough Trade Records.
The Wonderful and Frightening World Of... is the seventh studio album by English musical group the Fall, released in October 1984. It was the band's first album after signing to the Beggars Banquet label. Newcomer Brix Smith co-wrote three of the tracks, ushering in a relatively pop-oriented sound for the group. Paul Hanley left the band immediately after the accompanying UK tour, ending the group's distinctive "twin drummers" period.
Graham Keith Gouldman is an English singer, musician and songwriter, best known as the co-lead singer and bassist of the art rock band 10cc. He has been the band's only constant member since its formation in 1972. Before 10cc, Gouldman worked as a freelance songwriter and penned many hits for major rock and pop groups, including the Yardbirds, the Hollies, Herman's Hermits and Ohio Express.
Karl Burns is a British musician best known as the drummer for the Fall, featuring in many incarnations of the band between 1977 and 1998.

Strawberry Studios was a recording studio in Stockport, historically in Cheshire, now within Greater Manchester, England. Founded in 1968, it operated until the early 1990s. Strawberry Studios became one of the finest professional recording studios in the United Kingdom outside London used by a range of artists including 10cc, Joy Division, Neil Sedaka, Barclay James Harvest, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Moody Blues, Paul McCartney, Wax and Cliff Richard.
Paul Hanley is an English writer and podcaster. He is also one of the two drummers in the rock band House of All. He has previously been the drummer for the Fall (1980–1985), Tom Hingley and the Lovers, and Brix & the Extricated, all alongside his brother Steve Hanley.
