There are several categories of bicycle racing including road bicycle racing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX, and cycle speedway. Non-racing cycling sports include artistic cycling, cycle polo, freestyle BMX and mountain bike trials. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world governing body for cycling and international competitive cycling events. The International Human Powered Vehicle Association is the governing body for human-powered vehicles that imposes far fewer restrictions on their design than does the UCI. Liège–Bastogne–Liège, also known as La Doyenne, is a one-day classic cycling race in Belgium. First run in 1892, it is the oldest of the five Monuments of the European professional road cycling calendar; usually coming as the last of the spring classics. It is held annually in late April, in the Ardennes region of Belgium, from Liège to Bastogne and back.
The Queen Elisabeth Competition is an international competition for career-starting musicians held in Brussels. The competition is named after Queen Elisabeth of Belgium (1876–1965). It is a competition for classical violinists, pianists, singers and cellists. It also used to hold international competitions for composers from 1953 to 2012. The current Patron is Queen Mathilde of Belgium.
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, previously Omloop Het Volk, is a one-day road cycling race in Belgium, held annually in late February. It is the opening event of the Belgian cycling season, as well as the first race of the year in Northwestern Europe, and holds significant prestige because of it. Since 2017, the race is part of the UCI World Tour, cycling's top-tier professional events.
Lotto–Soudal is a Belgian professional cycling team at UCI WorldTeam level sponsored by the Belgian lottery and Soudal, an adhesives and sealants manufacturer. Vernon ("Vern") John Hanaray is a former road cyclist from New Zealand, who represented his native country in the men's individual road race at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics. He also competed at the 1974 and 1978 Commonwealth Games. Hanaray won the 1974 edition of the Archer Grand Prix cycle race.
Julien Stevens is a retired Belgian cyclist who raced from 1963 to 1977. Stevens spent most part of his career employed to help other riders, such as Rik Van Steenbergen, Rik Van Looy and Eddy Merckx. In 1969, at the road world championship in Zolder he got clear with Dutchman Harm Ottenbros but lost the sprint.
Lotto–Soudal Ladies is a women's professional cycling team based in Belgium, which competes in elite road bicycle racing and track cycling events, such as the UCI Women's World Tour. The team was established in 2006, and its colours are white, black, and red. The team manager and representative is Kurt Van De Wouwer, and the assistant team manager is Annelies Dom. Sponsors Lotto and Soudal also sponsor the Lotto–Soudal men's UCI WorldTeam.
The Belgian National Road Race Championship is a cycling race which decides who will become Belgian national champion for the year to come. The record for most wins is currently held by one of the most successful Belgian sprinters, Tom Steels, who managed to take four road championship titles.
Paul Deman was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer for 15 years from 1909–1924, and a carpet maker by trade.
Intermarché–Wanty–Gobert Matériaux is a UCI WorldTeam that is title sponsored by French supermarket chain Intermarché, Belgian engineering firm Wanty and Belgian building materials provider Groupe Gobert Matériaux. It was founded in 2008. It was based in Belgium and participated in races on the UCI Continental Circuits, and some UCI World Tour events before 2021, after the team bought the UCI license from CCC Pro Team in September 2020.
Carlo Bomans is a Belgian former racing cyclist. He competed in the individual road race event at the 1984 Summer Olympics. In October 2005 he succeeded José De Cauwer as coach of the Belgian national cycling team. As coach of the Belgian national cycling team he won the world championship cycling in 2012 with Philippe Gilbert.
Louis Duerloo was a Belgian racing cyclist. He won the Belgian national road race title in 1933 and the Tour of Flanders in 1935.
Lotte Kopecky is a Belgian road and track racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam SD Worx. In December 2017, she was named the Belgian Talent of the Year. She is a multiple world champion on the track, having won golds in the points race in 2021 and the madison in 2017. She participated in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, finishing 4th in the individual road race. In 2022, she won the Strade Bianche and Tour of Flanders classics.
