Stellenbosch University is a public research university situated in Stellenbosch, a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Stellenbosch is the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest extant university in Sub-Saharan Africa, together with the University of Cape Town - which received full university status on the same day in 1918. Stellenbosch University designed and manufactured Africa's first microsatellite, SUNSAT, launched in 1999.

Anthony Nigel Stanley Freeling is a British management consultant, marketing expert, university administrator, and academic. Since October 2022, he has been Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He was President of Hughes Hall, Cambridge from 2014 to 2022.

Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a Ghanaian entomologist and university administrator who served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 1 August, 2016 to 31 July, 2021. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a professor of entomology at the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science and prior to his appointment as vice-chancellor, he was the provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at the University of Ghana. James Charles McElnay OBE FCCP FRPharmS is the current Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Enterprise and Postgraduate Affairs and the Acting President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast. He was elected as acting Vice-Chancellor at a meeting of the standing committee of the university following the death of President and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Patrick Johnston. Russel Botman was the vice chancellor of Stellenbosch University between 2006 and 2014.
Willem "Wim" Johan Simon de Villiers is a South African doctor and the 12th rector and vice-chancellor of Stellenbosch University. He succeeded Russel Botman after the latter died suddenly of a heart attack in 2014.
