Les Nickelettes were a feminist satirical performance art troupe from San Francisco, California.
Les Nickelettes were created by a group of women experimental theatre artists from San Francisco State University in 1972. Started as a lark, first becoming vaudevillian cheerleaders at the Peoples' Nickelodeon midnight shows the group quickly evolved into a cutting edge feminist satirical performance art troupe. [1] Women were eager to join and because there were no auditions, entrance requirements, leaders, structure or rules, all women—experienced performers or novices—were welcome to take part in the free artistic expression of pure unfettered female humor. The group became "Virgins in Residence" at the Intersection Theatre in 1973 and 1974 performing 30 minute improv musical shows before the scheduled Charlie Chaplin and Betty Boop movies. [2] As female urban guerrillas Les Nickelettes were also involved in feminist stunts such as showing up at the infamous Condor topless night club on Broadway in North Beach dressed in Brownies/Girl Scouts uniforms adorned with plastic breasts demanding to perform on Carol Doda's stage. The troupe also crashed the 1973 opening of the San Francisco Opera. The San Francisco Chronicle society pages described their appearance; "Stealing the show ... were bizarrely dressed non-ticket holders who hopped out of a van." [3] The group's message was that the media only paid attention to entrances.
Evolving a more structured format the group created an original cabaret revue and was the first New Wave act to play at the famed Fab Mab then known as the Mabuhay Gardens dinner club in 1975.
The members of the group stabilized and, with a full commitment to the collective vision of a female led theatre group, decided to write a scripted play. In 1976 Les Nickelettes, Inc. became a non-profit organization and produced its first full-length musical comedy play; Peter Pan: A New Rock Fairytale. [4] [5] [6] The group continued to write and produce plays: 1978: Curtains! a murder mystery musical, 1980: Spaced Out an intergalactic musical comedy play. [7] The Gong Show episode featuring a performance by Les Nickelettes aired November 1, 1979. The troupe scored a perfect 10 but was beaten to first place by a disco act. [8] In 1981 Les Nickelettes collaborated with underground comic book artist Diane Noomin to create an original musical play based on her character Didi Glitz: I'd Rather Be Doing Something Else - The Didi Glitz Story. [9] In 1982 Les Nickelettes traveled to New York City and presented the cabaret/theatre show Anarchy In High Heels, a compilation of skits and songs from their previous shows. [10] In 1985 the group produced the last Les Nickelette full-length production: Oh Goddess! a spiritual musical comedy play.
Les Nickelettes were part of a '70s and '80s San Francisco phenomenon of women's theatre companies. Born from the second wave of feminism, there arose a desire to express a unique feminine humor and perspective. All aspects of play development, staging, performing, directing and producing were done by women. When a story demanded a male character, a female member obliged to act the male role. The group's commitment to presenting theatre from the eyes, ears and hearts of women continued through 1985. Les Nickelettes' work reflected a new style of musical comedy incorporating broad, irreverent comedy and satiric social commentary intermeshed with contemporary music and dance. The members changed throughout the history of the group but always maintained the artistic vision of a women's theatre collective. [11] [12]

In its purest form, the dialogue, action, story, and characters are created collaboratively by the players as the improvisation unfolds in present time, without use of an already prepared, written script.

A vaudeville was originally a comedy without psychological or moral intentions, based on a comical situation: a dramatic composition or light poetry, interspersed with songs or ballets. It became popular in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s, but the idea of vaudeville's theatre changed radically from its French antecedent.

The Curran Theatre, located at 445 Geary Street between Taylor and Mason Streets in the Theatre District of San Francisco, California opened in February 1922, and was named after its first owner, Homer Curran. As of 2014, the theater is owned by Carole Shorenstein Hays.

The Cockettes were an avant garde psychedelic hippie theater group founded by Hibiscus in the fall of 1969. The troupe was formed out of a group of hippie artists, men and women, who were living in Kaliflower, one of the many communes in Haight-Ashbury, a neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Hibiscus came to live with them because of their preference for dressing outrageously and proposed the idea of putting their lifestyle on the stage. Later in the storefront at 992 Valencia Street, now Artists' Television Access.
In Dahomey: A Negro Musical Comedy is a landmark 1903 American musical comedy described by theatre historian Gerald Bordman as "the first full-length musical written and played by blacks to be performed at a major Broadway house." It features music by Will Marion Cook, book by Jesse A. Shipp, and lyrics by poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. It was written by Jesse A. Shipp as a satire on the American Colonization Society's back-to-Africa movement of the earlier nineteenth century.
The San Francisco Mime Troupe is a theatre of political satire which performs free shows in various parks in the San Francisco Bay Area and around California. The Troupe does not, however, perform silent mime, but each year creates an original musical comedy that combines aspects of Commedia dell'Arte, melodrama, and broad farce with topical political themes. The group was awarded the Regional Theatre Award at the 41st Tony Awards.

The Committee was a San Francisco-based improvisational comedy group founded by Alan Myerson and Jessica Myerson. The Myersons were both alums of The Second City in Chicago. The Committee opened April 10, 1963 at 622 Broadway in a 300-seat Cabaret theater that used to be an indoor bocce ball court in San Francisco's North Beach.
The Cabaret Girl is a musical comedy in three acts with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by George Grossmith, Jr. and P. G. Wodehouse. It was produced by Grossmith and J. A. E. Malone at the Winter Garden Theatre in London's West End in September 1922 and featured Dorothy Dickson, Grossmith, Geoffrey Gwyther, and Norman Griffin in the leading roles.
Bette Bourne is a British actor, drag queen, campaigner, and activist. His theatrical career has spanned six decades. He came to prominence in the mid-1970s onwards after joining the New York-based alternative gay cabaret troupe Hot Peaches. He then went on to form his own alternative gay theatrical company, Bloolips.
Wanderlust Circus is a theatrical circus troupe based in Portland, Oregon, founded in 2006 by creative partners Noah Mickens and Nick "The Creature" Harbar. Since 2006, Wanderlust Circus has grown from a small band of creatives to a full-fledged circus troupe, and non-profit organization. The organization presently comprises a team of acrobats, a 10-piece swing band, a trick-roping cowboy clown; and several aerialists, contortionists, hand balancers, jugglers, and dancers. Their most popular recurring shows have been The White Album Christmas, A Circus Carol, and the dance party series MegaBounce.
The Practical Theatre Company was a Chicago-based theatre company founded by Northwestern University students and active throughout the 1980s. Its productions included new plays, satiric agitprop, rock and roll events, and a series of successful improvisational comedy revues. The PTC, whose motto was "Art is Good", is notable for the fact that the entire cast of its 1982 improvisational comedy revue, The Golden 50th Anniversary Jubilee was hired by Saturday Night Live.
Clementina's Baybrick, was a lesbian bar, dance club, and hostel in operation from September 1982 to October 1987 in the SoMA neighborhood at 1190 Folsom Street in San Francisco, California. It went by many name variations, including Clementina's Baybrick Inn, Clementina's Bay Brick Inn, The Baybrick, The Bay Brick, and The Brick.
