Leslie P. Ross was an American politician who served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives and as the 1st Mayor of Lawton,Oklahoma. He was also a Democratic candidate in the 1910 Oklahoma gubernatorial election.
Leslie P. Ross was born on February 4,1863,in Camden,Arkansas. His father was a confederate veteran and county sheriff. In 1890,he was elected to the Oklahoma Territorial Senate. He was elected the first Mayor of Lawton on October 24,1901. [1] He was later elected to the 2nd Oklahoma Legislature. [2] He was a Democratic candidate in the 1910 Oklahoma gubernatorial election,but lost the primary election. [3] He died March 9,1944. [2]

John William Elmer Thomas was a native of Indiana who moved to Oklahoma Territory in 1901,where he practiced law in Lawton. After statehood,he was elected to the first state senate,representing the Lawton area. In 1922,he ran successfully on the Democratic Party ticket for the U.S. House of Representatives from Oklahoma. He was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1926;he won this race and held the seat until 1950,when he lost the party nomination to A.S. (Mike) Monroney. Thomas returned to a private law practice in Washington,D.C.,and in 1957 moved his practice back to Lawton,where he died in 1965.
James Howard Edmondson was an American politician from the U.S. state of Oklahoma. He served as the 16th governor of Oklahoma from 1959 to 1963,and the appointed United States Senator from Oklahoma from 1963 to 1964,losing to Fred R. Harris in a 1964 Democratic primary election for the U.S. Senate. When he took office as Governor of Oklahoma at the age of 33,Edmondson was,and still is,the youngest governor in the history of the state.

Thus,the top two Democrat candidates –incumbent Governor of Florida William "Haydon" Burns and Mayor of Miami Robert King High –competed in a runoff election on May 24,1966. In an upset outcome,Robert King High was chosen over W. Haydon Burns as the Democratic Gubernatorial nominee.
