Liberty's Kitchen is a non-profit organization, located in the Mid-City New Orleans Neighborhood. Liberty's Kitchen opened its doors in April 2009 after a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. [1] This nonprofit cafe doubles as a training program for teens and young adults who want to change the course of their lives. Liberty's Kitchen provides their students with marketable job skills and experience, and allows them to learn the culinary techniques behind cooking from scratch. [2]

Liberty's Kitchen began operations in April 2009 as a social entrepreneurship supporting its sustainability with teaching-focused businesses. Liberty's Kitchen took its first trainees in the Youth Development Program in July 2009 and have since graduated and placed several young people into employment or higher education. [3] Since launching the training program, over 400 participant applications have been submitted.

Liberty's Kitchen expanded in 2014 with its move to the ReFresh Project at 300 North Broad Street. With a new 10,000 square foot facility in the ReFresh Project, Liberty's Kitchen is poised to significantly scale its efforts to improve the lives of vulnerable New Orleans youth. The ReFresh expansion offers both the internal capacity and the community collaborations to dramatically increase the number of youth empowered to create healthy futures.

In 2015, Liberty's Kitchen re-opened the Green Dot Cafe within the Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center offering paninis, smoothies, coffee, and assorted snacks.

Mission

Liberty's Kitchen seeks young people who demonstrate positive traits, such as leadership or willingness to change, that could help them progress in the Youth Development Program. The objective is to graduate students with a sense of purpose and confidence and the skills and tools to succeed in gainful employment by providing a path to self-sufficiency through food service-based training, leadership, education, and life skills programs.

Accomplishments

Liberty's Kitchen has received donations and support from some of the nation's largest foundations – the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, [1] Baptist Community Ministries, the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, [4] and the Goldring Foundation.

New Orleans College Prep

In August 2010, Liberty's Kitchen initiated the Healthy School Lunch Program providing freshly prepared nutritious meals to New Orleans' public schoolchildren on a daily basis. [5] Liberty's Kitchen won the bid and contract for Food Service Management at New Orleans College Prep Charter School to serve over 600 students breakfast, lunch and snack daily. [5]

Leah Chase American chef and artist

Leyah (Leah) Chase was an American chef based in New Orleans, Louisiana. An author and television personality, she was known as the Queen of Creole Cuisine, advocating both African-American art and Creole cooking. Her restaurant, Dooky Chase, was known as a gathering place during the 1960s among many who participated in the Civil Rights Movement, and was known as a gallery due to its extensive African-American art collection. In 2018 it was named one of the 40 most important restaurants of the past 40 years by Food & Wine.

Emeril Lagasse American celebrity chef and restaurateur (born 1959)

Emeril John Lagassé III is an American celebrity chef, restaurateur, television personality, cookbook author, and National Best Recipe award winner for his "Turkey and Hot Sausage Chili" recipe in 2003. He is a regional James Beard Award winner, known for his mastery of Creole and Cajun cuisine and his self-developed "New New Orleans" style. He is of Portuguese descent on his mother’s side, while being of French heritage through his father.

Tulane University Marching Band

The Tulane University Marching Band (TUMB) is the marching band of Tulane University. It performs at every Tulane Green Wave football home game in Yulman Stadium, bowl games, and some away games. It is also marches in New Orleans Mardi Gras parades each year, having appeared in Le Krewe d'Etat, the Krewe of Thoth, the Krewe of Bacchus, and the Krewe of Rex, among others.

Corey Hébert

Corey Hébert is a physician, journalist, and educator practicing in New Orleans, Louisiana and he is currently the Chief Medical Editor/Correspondent for Black News Channel (BNC) and the Chief Executive Officer of Community Health TV and College Health TV. Hebert has been the on-air Chief Medical Editor for WDSU, the NBC television affiliate New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, and for Hearst-Argyle Broadcasting for over 15 years. Hebert is an on-air expert for the Dr. Oz show and www.DoctorOz.com. He is an assistant professor in private practice at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and Tulane University, where he teaches and sees patients in all populations but focuses on healthy lifestyles, adolescent medicine, medical nutrition, attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and post traumatic stress disorder as it relates to COVID-19. He is the former Chief Medical Officer for the New Orleans Public School District (NOPS) as well as the Medical Director of the Louisiana Recovery School District, which was the largest school district in the state during his tenure. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Dillard University Most recently Dr. Hebert was tapped to be the Chief Medical Officer of CareRx Inform, (www.carerxinform.com) a nationwide prescription service that provides discounted prescription prices and telemedicine for patients and their pets.

Café Reconcile Restaurant in Louisiana, United States

Café Reconcile is a non-profit organization and restaurant in Central City area of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. It was founded in 1996 by Craig Cuccia and Rev. Harry Tompson, S.J. and provides culinary and life skills training for at risk youth, allowing them to enter the hospitality and entertainment industry of New Orleans.

Tuesdays Children


Tuesday's Children is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a lifetime healing for families who have been forever changed by terrorism, military conflict or mass violence. Since 2001, Tuesday's Children has helped more than 42,000 individuals impacted by Tuesday, September 11, 2001 and other tragedies, including: families of 9/11 victims, responders and military service members; international youth; global victims of terrorism; and domestic and international communities impacted by mass violence, such as Newtown, CT, Parkland and Orlando, FL, Thousand Oaks, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Aurora, CO, and many others. Tuesday's Children has spent two decades providing trauma and grief support, mental health counseling, youth mentoring, skills-building workshops, parenting advisement, community and family engagement events, and volunteerism opportunities.

Yulman Stadium Football stadium at Tulane University

Yulman Stadium is the on-campus venue for football at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. It currently has a capacity of 30,000 spectators, with 4,500 premium seats in two fan clubs – the Westfeldt Terrace and the Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer Family Club. The stadium's first game and grand opening was the 2014 season's home opener against its former Southern Conference and Southeastern Conference foe Georgia Tech on September 6, 2014.

Calvin A. Johnson Jr. Musical artist

Calvin A. Johnson Jr. is an American saxophonist, bandleader, composer, producer, and actor from New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. A multi-instrumentalist, he is best known as a tenor and soprano saxophone player but also performs and records on alto and baritone saxophones, clarinet, and flute. Johnson has worked with many of the biggest names in New Orleans music, including Aaron Neville, Harry Connick Jr., the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Mystikal, Irvin Mayfield, Mannie Fresh, and others. Johnson is the nephew of New Orleans clarinetist Ralph Johnson, a longtime member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Johnson began playing saxophone at the age of seven, and since 2008 has been playing with his own band, Calvin Johnson & Native Son. In 2015, he started a new band with Dirty Dozen Brass Band founding member and sousaphone player, Kirk Joseph, called Chapter:SOUL.

LCMC Health System

Louisiana Children's Medical Center is a nonprofit network of healthcare providers in Southern Louisiana, based out of New Orleans. Members include academic centers, acute care facilities, and research hospitals. LCMC Health's mission is to provide health, care, and education beyond extraordinary. LCMC Health, along with Ochsner, dominate the Louisiana health and hospital space.

Stephen Hilger is an American photographer, writer, and educator who lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Jason Uhlman is a baseball coach and former shortstop, who is the current head baseball coach of the Tulane Green Wave. He played college baseball at Los Angeles Harbor College from 1993 to 1994 before transferring to Nevada where he played in 1995 and 1997. He also served as the head coach of the Los Angeles Harbor Seahawks (2000–2001).
