Lichfield Ladies Rugby Union Football Club is a women's rugby union club based in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. They play their home matches at Cooke Fields and play in the Women's Premiership. [1] They are also the women's team of Lichfield Rugby Union Football Club. [2]

History

Lichfield Ladies were initially founded as part of Lichfield Rugby Union Football Club. They eventually managed to make their way to the Women's Premiership, after three successive promotions, [3] where they have been playing since before 2002. Lichfield Ladies have a local rivalry with fellow Women's Premiership club, Worcester Ladies. [4]

In 2009, they hosted a festival of rugby designed to raise awareness of the 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup which was being held in England. The festival was also intended to gain more players for Lichfield Ladies. [5] Lichfield Ladies' second team plays in RFU Championship Midlands 2. [6] In 2011, they were the only team to defeat Richmond Women in the league. Richmond had previously gone unbeaten until they played Lichfield. [7] Between 2010 and 2013, Lichfield Ladies finished in third position in the Women's Premiership for three consecutive years. [8]

In 2006, there were plans for Lichfield to install an artificial turf pitch at Cooke Fields. [9]

In 2017, Lichfield were disappointed not to be selected for the new Women's Super Rugby. After losing an appeal, they commented that they considered the selection system had been flawed, not based on results, as Lichfield came 3rd in the Women's Premiership, more based on the promise of a future supply of international players as well as bias in the selection process. Notable players

Lichfield Ladies have had a number of international players play for them. Since 2005, England national women's rugby union team captain, Sarah Hunter has played for Lichfield Ladies. [11] Emily Braund, Vicky Fleetwood, Georgina Gulliver, Natasha Hunt, Justine Lucas, Harriet Millar-Mills, Emily Scarratt and Tamara Taylor all played for Lichfield Ladies and England after being included in the England Women's elite playing squad. Lichfield Rugby Union Football Club is a rugby union club based in the city of Lichfield, Staffordshire. The first XV currently play in Midlands 1 West of the Midlands Division, a sixth tier league in the English rugby union system, following their relegation from Midlands Premier at the end of the 2018–19 season. It is one of the oldest rugby football clubs still in active in England, although the oldest in Staffordshire is Burton Rugby Union Football Club, which was founded in 1870. The club runs three senior teams, a veterans team, two women's teams and a youth section ranging from under sevens to colts and includes a women's under-18 team.

The RFU Championship, known for sponsorship reasons as the Greene King IPA Championship from 2013–14, is the second tier of the English rugby union league system and was founded in September 1987. The twelve-side league was known as National Division One and in 2009 changed from semi-professional clubs to fully professional. The 2019 champions were London Irish, winning automatic promotion to Premiership Rugby.

Midlands 1 West is an English level 6 rugby union regional league for rugby clubs in the western region of the Midlands, including sides from Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Birmingham and the West Midlands, Worcestershire and occasionally Cheshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Oxfordshire.

Guernsey RFC

Guernsey Rugby Football Club is an amateur rugby union team who play at Footes Lane in St Peter Port on the Channel Island of Guernsey. The club was formed in 1928. Currently the club runs two senior teams, a veterans side and a colts side. Their first XV, the Guernsey Raiders currently play in Level 5 following their relegation from National League 2 South at the end of the 2018-19 season. The Guernsey Raiders Ladies team plays in Level 4, Women's National Challenge South East South 1.

Darlington Mowden Park Sharks Ladies Rugby Football Club is a women's rugby union club in Darlington, County Durham, England founded in 1996. Their top try scorer Louisa Ramsey became the first player to score over 10 tries for Scotland. They are the ladies team of Darlington Mowden Park R.F.C. and play in the Women's Premiership. They also play their home games at The Darlington Arena.

Aylesford Bulls Ladies Rugby Football Club were a women's rugby union club based in Aylesford, Kent, England. They played in the Women's Premiership. They were founded in 1998 and were the ladies team of Aylesford Bulls. Following an agreement with Harlequins, Aylesford Bulls initially received support from them however in 2017, they were taken over to become Harlequins Ladies.

Bristol Ladies, formally Clifton Ladies RFC, is a women's rugby union team based in Bristol, England. They are a standalone, independent rugby club, running in partnership with the Bristol Bears since becoming affiliated to them in 2008 and play their home matches at Cleve RFC in the Premier 15s.

Richmond Women, formally Finchley RFC, is a women's rugby union team based in Richmond, London, England. They were founded in 1986 and play in the Women's Premiership. They are also the women's team of Richmond F.C..
