Lick's Homeburgers & Ice Cream was a Canadian restaurant chain, owned by Lick's Concepts, Inc., a private company. The first Lick's opened in 1980, operated by Denise Meehan, who then turned the concept into a franchise in 1984. At its height in 2012, the chain had 30 locations, all in Ontario. Only one restaurant, in Parry Sound, continues to use the name Lick's. The company continues to sell frozen food.
Lick's was formerly known for its hamburgers, nicknamed "homeburgers", which were considered higher quality than those of other fast food chains. The chain also had what was described as a "zany in-store experience", with employees singing pop songs, sometimes with modified lyrics, while they cooked burgers and fries. [1] Both concepts were abandoned in the 2000s, as the company switched to a more generic brand identity as well as the use of frozen instead of fresh hamburger patties. [2]
Denise Meehan, a native of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, grew up in a tourist resort operated by her parents. [3] Meehan, the president and sole shareholder, founded the chain in 1980 with a $5,000 loan. Meehan opened her first Lick's location store on Queen Street East in Toronto in 1980. The second store opened at 2383 Kingston Rd in Scarborough several years later. (Both these locations are now defunct.) From 1984 through 2009, the business expanded to several cities in the province of Ontario as the Lick's name and menu became available for franchise. At its zenith in 2012, there were over 30 Lick's locations throughout southern Ontario. In addition, major Ontario supermarket chains also carried frozen Lick's hamburger patties. [2]
In 2002, Meehan was named to the Sales Hall of Fame by the Canadian Professional Sales Association. [4] [5] Meehan was profiled by Hilary magazine in 2008. [6]
Lick's began to encounter difficulty in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, partly because of the recession's effect on consumer habits shifting away from sit-down eateries to takeout. [7] As well, the proliferation of gourmet burger chains such as The Burger's Priest and The Works eroded Lick's market share. [8]
There was a wave of closings of Toronto-area Lick's franchises in 2012 and 2013, including the closing of the original location. [9] [10] [11] [1] By April 2017, the chain had two stores left: one in Toronto and one in Parry Sound.
In July 2021, the last remaining restaurant in Toronto, at 900 Warden Avenue, ceased being a franchisee and was renamed Andy's Artisan Burgers, leaving one remaining Lick's restaurant in Parry Sound, Ontario. [12] The online frozen burger business continues.

White Castle is an American regional hamburger restaurant chain with 345 locations across 13 states, with its greatest presence in the Midwest and New York metropolitan area. Founded on September 13, 1921, in Wichita, Kansas, it has been generally credited as the world's first fast-food hamburger chain. It is known for its small, square hamburgers referred to as "sliders". The burgers were initially priced at five cents until 1929 and remained at 10 cents until 1949. In the 1940s, White Castle periodically ran promotional ads in local newspapers which contained coupons offering five burgers for ten cents, takeout only. In 2014, Time named the White Castle slider "The Most Influential Burger of All Time".

The first location opened in Sauk City, Wisconsin, on July 18, 1984, under the name "Culver's Frozen Custard and ButterBurgers." The privately held company is headquartered in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. The chain operates primarily in the Midwestern United States, and has a total of 899 restaurants in 26 states as of February 2023.

The Quarter Pounder is a hamburger sold by international fast food chain McDonald's, so named for containing a patty with a precooked weight of 4 oz, a quarter of a pound (113.4 g). It was introduced in 1971. In 2013, the Quarter Pounder was expanded to represent a whole line of hamburgers that replaced the company's discontinued Angus hamburger. In 2015, McDonald's increased the precooked weight to 4.25 oz (120 g).

Fuddruckers is an American fast casual, franchised restaurant chain that specializes in hamburgers. The Fuddruckers concept is to offer large hamburgers in which the meat is ground on-site and buns are baked on the premises. As of 2019, Fuddruckers had 49 company-operated restaurants and 107 franchises across the United States and around the world. The company headquarters is in Houston, Texas. On September 8, 2020, Fuddruckers owner Luby's, Inc. announced they plan to liquidate existing assets, including Fuddruckers' assets, distributing the proceeds to investors after the proposed sale of the chains. On June 21, 2021, Black Titan Franchise Systems announced a deal to acquire Fuddruckers for $18.5 million.
Webers is a hamburger restaurant on Ontario Highway 11, located 15 kilometres north of Orillia, Ontario that opened in July 1963. Webers grills their burgers over charcoal, with a grill man said to be able to flip up to 800 patties an hour. Long line ups are a common sight at the restaurant, which made the restaurant build a footbridge over the highway to provide access for guests from the southbound side. The restaurant's hamburger patties are also sold at Loblaws outlets.

Black Bar 'n' Burger is an Israeli hamburger and bar chain with 14 locations around the country. The chain provides 12 different burger varieties, all named after people in American pop culture. They provide vegetarian burgers as well as offering gluten-free buns, in an attempt to expand their customer base. The locations have large bars with a wide variety of beers, cocktails and liquor.
Hero Certified Burgers is a Canadian restaurant chain franchise that sells hamburgers and other quick service restaurant fare. It is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and was founded in 2004. It had almost 60 locations as of March 2017, and opened its first store in the United States in 2015 in Elmwood Village, Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo location closed at the end of 2016.
