Linus Woods (born June 3, 1967) [1] is a Manitoba Aboriginal artist known for his spirit animals and Indigenous cultural themes which express his spiritual journey. [2] [3]
Linus Woods was born in 1967 to Sioux and Ojibway parents [4] and is a Dakota/Ojibway artist. He grew up in the Long Plain First Nation in Southern Manitoba. [5] He is a self-taught artist, who took some art classes at Brandon University. [4] He also studied informally with Jane Ash Poitras. [5]
As an artist, he began travelling across North America in 1994 to gather Aboriginal native legend and folklore. At times "he lived with people who spoke only in their native language and practiced a traditional way of life." His paintings have often featured animals, especially those related to Aboriginal spirituality. [4] His has also worked in the creation of public installations. [5] Some of his most regarded work involve the encountering of UFOs during traditional Aboriginal settings. [6] He has exhibited in both US and Canadian cities, and is represented by the Bearclaw Gallery in Alberta. [4]
Woods's works are in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank and Peace Hills Trust. [7] In 2002 he also exhibited at the Inuit and Indian Art Gallery in Hull, Quebec, in 2003 he exhibited at the Image Makers First Nation Art Exhibit in Los Angeles, California, and in 2010 he exhibited his work at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. He now resides in Edmonton, Alberta, where he has served as the Artist in Residence at Highlands Junior High School. [4] He has been a recipient of grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and the Indian and Northern Affairs department of Canada. [7]
Norval Morrisseau, also known as Copper Thunderbird, was an Indigenous Canadian artist from the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation. He is widely regarded as the grandfather of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada. Known as the "Picasso of the North," Morrisseau created works depicting the legends of his people, the cultural and political tensions between native Canadian and European traditions, his existential struggles, and his deep spirituality and mysticism. His style is characterized by thick black outlines and bright colors. He founded the Woodlands School of Canadian art and was a prominent member of the “Indian Group of Seven."
Kenneth Thomas Benjamin Chee Chee , known as Benjamin Chee Chee, was an Ojibwa Canadian artist born in Temagami, Ontario. He is best known for his modern, simplified, and graceful depictions of birds and animals.
The Long Plain First Nation is an Ojibway and Dakota First Nations band government in Manitoba, Canada.
Calvin Murray Sinclair is a former member of the Canadian Senate and First Nations lawyer who served as chairman of the Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 2009 to 2015. He previously served as a judge in Manitoba from 1988 to 2009, being the first Indigenous judge appointed in the province. Sinclair was appointed to the Senate of Canada on April 2, 2016. In November 2020, he announced his retirement from the Senate effective January 31, 2021.
Christi Marlene Belcourt is a Canadian visual artist and author. She is best known for her acrylic paintings which depict floral patterns inspired by Métis and First Nations historical beadwork art. Belcourt's work often focuses on questions around identity, culture, place and divisions within communities.
Jackson Beardy was an Indigenous Oji-Cree Anishinaabe artist born in Canada. His works are characterized by scenes from Ojibwe and Cree oral history and many focus on the relationship between humans and nature. He belonged to the Woodland School of Art and was a prominent member of the Indian Group of Seven. His work has contributed to the recognition of Indigenous contemporary art within Canada.
The Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporation (PNIAI) was a group of First Nations artists from Canada, with one from the United States. Founded in November 1973, they were Indigenous painters who exhibited in the mainstream art world.
Alex Simeon Janvier LL.D was a First Nations painter in Canada. A member of the Indian Group of Seven, he helped pioneer contemporary Aboriginal art in Canada.

Carmen L. Robertson is a writer and scholar of art history and indigenous peoples. She was born in Balcarres, Saskatchewan, of Lakota and Scottish ancestry. She is Canada Research Chair in North American Art and Material Culture in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Carleton University. Before joining Carleton, Robertson was an associate professor in the Faculty of Media, Art & Performance at the University of Regina (2006-2012). She also served as the Indian Fine Arts department head at the First Nations University of Canada where she taught from 2000-2006. A number of Robertson's writings focus on the Aboriginal Canadian artist Norval Morrisseau. She is past president of the Native Heritage Foundation of Canada.

Terrance James Houle is an Internationally recognized Canadian interdisciplinary artist and member of the Kainai Nation and ancestry from the Sandy Bay Reservation, Manitoba. His Mother is Maxine WeaselFat from the Kainai Nation and Father Donald Vernon Houle from Sandy Bay Reservation in Manitoba, they are both 3rd generation Residential School attendees & reside on the Blood reservation in Southern Alberta, Canada. His work ranges from subversive to humorous absurdity to solemn and poetic artistic expressions. His work often relates to the physical body as it investigates issues of history, colonization, Aboriginal identity and representation in popular culture, as well as conceptual ideas based on memory, home, and reserve communities. Currently, He has co-directed a Short Animation Otanimm/Onnimm with his daughter Neko which is currently touring Film festivals, In Los Angeles, NYC, Toronto, New Zealand, Vancouver, Oxford & many more. Recently their short film won the prestigious Golden Sheaf Indigenous Award at Yorkton Film Festival and is Neko's First Award in Film at 17 years old.
