Lisa Hartt is a Canadian singer and Juno Award nominee. She was the lead singer of The Lisa Hartt Band during the 1970s. They had a hit with "Old Time Movies". As a solo artist, she also had a radio hit with the single "Touch Me".

Background

Lisa Hartt was born in Montreal in 1946 and grew up in La Tuque and Dorval, Quebec. She ventured into music at the age of ten. [1] She started her career in Montreal. At the age of 15 she was working as a backing singer for artists. Some years later, she was singing backup for Gino Vanelli. [2] In addition to Vanelli, she has worked with April Wine, Rayburn Blake of the group Mashmakhan, Natalie Cole, David Foster, Ralph Murphy, Anne Murray, Phil Ramone, Brenda Russell, Ken Tobias, and Maurice White. [3]

Her international career has seen her performing in various parts of the world. [4] She was nominated for a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 1976. [5]

Her first band included musicians, Wayne Pilon on bass and Brian Wray on Keyboards. [6] Wray had been a member of 70s groups, Natural Gas, Motherlode and Truck. [7] [8]

Career

1960s to 1980s

In 1973, she recorded the single, "Touch Me" bw "Aftermath" which was released on Polydor 2065 182. Written by her, it was just credited to her first name. On August 11, it had moved from #60 to #56 on the RPM Weekly Programmers Pop Music Playlist. [9] [10] It managed to get to #41 on September 22. [11] [12] [13]

In 1976, she was an artist in the Rockabye Hamlet production. It also featured, Rory Dodd, Cal Dodd, Cliff Jones and The Irish Rovers. [14] She performed the songs, "If My Morning Begins", "The Last Blues I'll Ever Sing", and "Denmark Is Still". [15]

In 1975, the Lisa Hartt Band released the single, "The Last Blues I’ll Ever Sing" bw "Let’s Live Together" on Rising RI-001X. [16]

Album

In 1976, the band released the album Starwatcher on Rising RRLP 104. [17] The first single from the LP was "All Over the World" which was produced by Phil Ramone [18] The band's album created enough noise to get her a Juno Award nomination in 1976. [5] [19] In 1977, it was an RPM Weekly "Feature Album" for March 12, a "Cancon LP" pick by the Steede Report on February 19, and a Record Week album pick for February 28. Additionally, the single "All Over the World" was a Steed Report "Top Pick" for March 5, and a Record Week "Single Pick" for February 28. [20]

Further activities

Music magazine, Record World reported in its April 2 issue that "All Over the World" was getting heavy airplay. [21]

They followed up that year with "Old Time Movie" bw "Starwatcher" on Rising RR-003. [16] In late May, RPM Weekly reported that Rising Records were promoting three singles, "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" by Rockgarden, "Old Time Movie" by The Lisa Hartt Band, and "Let The Games Begin" by Kidstuff. [22] In June, the single peaked at #12 on Vancouver's CKLG chart and spent a total of eight weeks in the chart. [1] The band released "Dream Me Away" bw "Sweet Serenade" on Rising RR-010 in 1977. [16]

In mid-July 1977, RPM Weekly wrote that it was confirmed the band would tour with Aquarius Records recording act, April Wine and open for them. At that time the band consisted of Hartt on guitar and vocals, Rayburn Blake on guitar, Richard Yuen on keyboards, Marty Cordrey on drums, and their newest member Ray Hands on bass who had replaced Denny Gerrard. [23]

In the February 18, 1978, issue of Billboard, there was a report of a suggestion by an earlier article that the group had left the Rising Records label and were in negotiations with other companies. Robert Hahn of Champlain Productions was not impressed and claimed that the band had a "subsisting agreement" with the label. [24]

Post Lisa Hartt Band

1990s to 2000s

On November 22, 2018, she was at a Cashbox Canada Legacy award presentation for John Harris, a prominent figure in the Canadian music industry. He was also her manager at one stage. She performed her hit, "Old Time Movie" and "Tower of Song" which was composed by Leonard Cohen. [25]

In 2022, she recorded a 4-track EP titled Arival which includes the song "Don’t Tell Me How I Feel" which is a tribute to her late brother, Christopher who died in 2015. Joan Prowse of Cinefocus created, produced and directed the video for the song. [26] The single was released on November 11. The EP is due for release in January, 2023. [27] It contains another song "Wasted" which is an account of her life on the road and the toll it took. [28]

Douglas Brian Riley, CM was a Canadian musician, also known as Dr. Music. He spent two decades with the Famous People Players as its musical director, besides his participation on over 300 album projects in various genres. Riley died of a heart attack on August 27, 2007.

Gwendolyn Dianne Brooks, was a soul, r&b and jazz singer from New Jersey. With the Three Playmates, Brooks recorded several songs in 1957. She moved to Toronto shortly thereafter. Her part in Canadian soul music history began when the group Diane Brooks, Eric Mercury and the Soul Searchers was formed. As a solo singer, she recorded two albums and several singles of her own. Her biggest solo hit was "Walkin' on My Mind" in 1969. She was also a prolific session singer. As a vocalist, she provided backing vocals on albums by a multitude of artists that include Anne Murray, Gino Vannelli and Richie Havens. She was also a song-writer.

Footloose was a Canadian band that had a hit in 1979 with "Leaving For Maui". The membership included Tim Feehan and later, Doug Riley.

Chester was a Canadian bubblegum pop band, active primarily from 1972 to 1975. Although they released only two singles in their original form before breaking up, the single "Make My Life a Little Bit Brighter" was a Top 10 hit on the Canadian pop charts in 1973 and the band garnered a Juno Award nomination for Most Promising Group at the Juno Awards of 1974.

Truck was a 1970s Canadian rock group with a musical style similar to Natural Gas and Lighthouse. Signed to the Capitol label, they released two singles and an album. The outfit started out as Sound Spectrum in 1966 and by the early 1970s they had absorbed experienced musicians from groups Natural Gas and Motherlode. Their name had also been changed to Truck! The 1970s lineup was completely different to what it was when the group began. A busy live attraction, they did reasonably well with their album Truck which had an unbroken run for about a month-and-a-half in the charts.


Brian Wray was a veteran Canadian musician and musical arranger. He had been a member of three major Canadian bands, Natural Gas in the late 1960s, Motherlode and Truck in the early 1970s. He also worked with Lisa Hartt, Freedom North, Moe Koffman, David Johannesson and other artists. In later years he moved more towards the jazz genre.

The Regents were a Canadian group formed in 1959. They started out as a club band and then reformed as a recording band. They had a Top 20 hit with "Me and You".

Young was a Canadian rock music group led by Roger Plomish.They released a few singles and an album during the 1970s. They had success with "Goin' to the Country" which was a hit in both Canada and the United States. Their album also spent about 14 weeks in the charts. The group may have been working on a second album prior to their break up.


Tapestry was an early 1970s Canadian musical group fronted by singers Jack Winters, Heather Woodburn and Judy Harmon aka Judi Jensen. They released several singles and had a hit with "The Music Doesn't Seem to Be Going Anywhere". Some of their other singles also charted.

Heat Exchange was a Canadian rock band who had evolved out of a late 1960s, blues quartet. They had a hit in Canada in 1972 with "Can You Tell Me". Nearly five decades later they would finally have their album released.

Yvonne Murray is a Canadian singer who has had a hit in 1983 with "Don't Send Me Roses " which did well on two Canadian charts. She had another hit the following year with "Let's Not Waste Another Heartbeat". She has sung on multiple film soundtracks. She sang the title song "Never Far Apart" for the film, Melanie and has worked as an actress. She has worked with Paul Zaza on multiple projects. With Zaza she sang the theme to Kimba the White Lion . She also did the voice for Kimba.

The Longo Brothers were a Canadian act who had some national hits during the 1970s. Other artists have also recorded their compositions. They have collaborated with Moe Koffman, Paul Zaza and Yvonne Murray.

Poor Souls was a Scottish band who had a hit in the UK, broke up and then re-emerged as a Canadian band who recorded for the Quality Records label, and two hits in 1970 with "Lookin’ Round", and "Comin' Round". They also had another with "Land of the Few".

Jim Mancel was a Canadian singer, producer, composer and arranger who had several hits from the early 1970s and another in the early 1980s. He has recorded for the Polydor, Apex, and Quality labels, and Quality's subsidiary, Celebration. His hits include, "I Could Give You the World" which was a hit on the MAPL chart in 1970, and his 1975 single "Let the Phone Ring" which was also commercially successful in Canada. He hit the adult contemporary chart in 1977 with "Just Be Yourself". He was also a member of the Canadian band, Chester who had a hit in 1973 with "Make My Life a Little Bit Brighter".

Madrigal was a Canadian band who had a 1970 hit in two different charts with "I Believe in Sunshine". Their album also made the charts the following year.

Aaron Space was a Canadian rock group that had a national hit with "Keep on Movin" in 1971. They had evolved out of a band called Mudflat.
