Lisnagar Oscar (foaled 9 May 2013) is an Irish-bred, British-trained racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt racing. He won his only Point-to-point race and then showed very promising form as a Novice hurdler in the 2018/19 National Hunt season, winning the Prestige Novices' Hurdle and being placed in both the Prestige Novices' Hurdle and the Sefton Novices' Hurdle. In the following season he raced unsuccessfully in Steeplechases before returning to smaller obstacles and recording his biggest win in the Stayers' Hurdle. He failed to win in his first four start of the 2020/21 season, when he underwent surgery to correct his breathing.

Background

Lisnagar Oscar is a bay horse with a small white star bred in Ireland by Denis Fitzgerald who named the horse after his residence at Lisnagar near Fermoy in County Cork. [2] The horse was gelded before the start of his racing career.

He was sired by Oscar, a horse who finished second to Peintre Celebre in the Prix du Jockey Club before becoming a leading sire of National Hunt horses. His other major winners have included Lord Windermere, Rock On Ruby, Oscar Whisky Paisley Park and Big Zeb. [3] Lisnagar Oscar's dam Asta Belle was an unraced daughter of the Prix Ganay winner Astarabad. [4] She was a full-sister to Whisper, a two-time winner of the Liverpool Hurdle. Asta Belle was a female-line descendant of the British broodmare Sunny Belle, a half-sister to the dam of Windsor Lad. [5]

Racing career

2017/18 Point-to-point season

Lisnagar Oscar began his career on the amateur Point-to-point circuit. On 25 March 2018 he started 9/4 favourite for a three-mile maiden hurdle on soft to heavy ground at Liscarroll and won by eight lengths. [6]

On 12 April he was consigned to the Goffs UK Aintree Sale where he was not auctioned but was bought privately for £105,000 by the trainer Rebecca Curtis. [7] The horse was taken into training by Curtis at Newport, Pembrokeshire and entered the ownership of the Racing For Fun syndicate.

2018/19 National Hunt season

On his first appearance under National Hunt rules, Lisnagar Oscar finished third to the Paul Nicholls-trained McFabulous in a National Hunt Flat race over two miles at Chepstow Racecourse on 14 October. For the rest of the season the gelding was campaigned in Novice hurdle races. He ran second in a minor event at Ffos Las Racecourse in November and was then stepped up in class for the Grade 2 Bristol Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse in December and finished second again, beaten two and three quarter lengths by Rockpoint. On 18 January Lisnagar Oscar started favourite for a minor event at Chepstow in which he was ridden by Sean Bowen and recorded his first success under rules as he took the lead at the second last obstacle and held off the challenge of Dickie Diver to prevail by a head. [8] Bowen was again in the saddle when the gelding started at odds of 6/1 for the Grade 2 Prestige Novices' Hurdle over three miles at Haydock Park on 16 February. After tracking the front-running Ask Ben, Lisnagar Oscar gained the advantage at the penultimate flight of hurdles and drew away to win by ten lengths despite being eased down in the closing stages. For his last two races of the season Lisnagar Oscar moved up to the highest class to compete in Grade 1 events and acquitted himself well despite failing to win. At the Cheltenham Festival in March he finished fifth to the 50/1 outsider Minella Indo in the Spa Novices' Hurdle [10] and in the following month he came home third behind Champ and Emitom in the Sefton Novices' Hurdle at Aintree Racecourse.

2019/20 National Hunt season

Lisnagar Oscar began the 2019/20 National Hunt season by competing in novice chases. He made his debut over the bigger obstacles at Chepstow on 11 October when he started favourite but was beaten a neck Ardlethen after failing to recover from a mistake at the final fence. The gelding went off the 4/6 favourite at Stratford Racecourse three weeks later but after tracking the front-running winner Black Op he made a jumping error at the third last and then faded badly to come home third, beaten more than thirty-three lengths. [11] At Haydock in November he reverted to hurdles but was never in contention as he finished ninth of the thirteen finishers behind Stoney Mountain in the Betfair Stayers' Handicap Hurdle. The new year saw no improvement as he fell at the second flight of a handicap hurdle at Warwick Racecourse on 11 January. Two weeks later he started a 50/1 outsider for the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham and produced a much improved performance to take third place behind Paisley Park and Summerville Boy. [12]

At Cheltenham on 12 March, ridden as on his previous start by Adam Wedge, Lisnagar Oscar started a 50/1 outsider in a fifteen-runner field for the Stayers' Hurdle. Paisley Park started favourite while the other contenders included Apple's Jade, Penhill, Summerville Boy, Emitom (Rendlesham Hurdle), City Island (Baring Bingham Novices' Hurdle), L'Ami Serge (Aintree Hurdle) and Bacardys (Champion Novice Hurdle). He raced in mid-division before moving up to overtake the front-running Apple's Jade between the last two hurdles. He stayed on well up the run in and prevailed by two lengths from Ronald Pump, with three lengths back to Bacardys in third. [13] After the race Rebecca Curtis said "It's a shock he's won. I didn't think he'd beat Paisley Park, but I was hoping we'd have a good run here after the last time. It was like he'd just got his confidence back the last time. I'm just speechless... I thought he'd make a lovely chaser, but he didn't take to fences. He's quite small and is quick and neat over his hurdles. We tried fences early in the season. It all went wrong. Whether that put him off racing for a bit, I don't know. Something just wasn't quite right with him... He just sprung to form six weeks ago and we fancied him to run well today." [14]

2020/21 National Hunt season

At Wetherby Racecourse on 31 October Lisnagar Oscar made his first appearance since this Stayers' Hurdle win, Lisnagar Oscar carried top weight of 160 pounds in the Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle in which he took the lead approaching the second last before fading in the closing stages and finishing fourth behind the mare Roksana. In the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury in November he went to the front at the third last hurdle but as at Wetherby, he tired badly and came home seventh of the ten runners behind Thyme Hill, beaten more than twenty lengths by the winner. After the race the gelding underwent surgery to correct a breathing problem. [15]

In the Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock in January Lisnagar Oscar produced a better effort, taking the lead at the eighth flight and then rallying after being overtaken by Third Wind at the last to finish second by three quarters of a length. At Cheltenham on 18 March the gelding attempted to repeat his 2020 victory in the Stayers' Hurdle and started at odds of 11/1 in a fifteen-runner field. Ridden by Harry Skelton he appeared to be going well when he fell "heavily" at the seventh hurdle. [16]

Silviniaco Conti French racehorse

Silviniaco Conti was a French-bred, British-trained Selle Français racehorse who competed in National Hunt races. After winning several important races over hurdles he emerged as a leading long-distance steeplechaser in 2012. After winning both his races in his native country, the horse won his first three races in England, culminating with a success in the two and a half mile Ascot Hurdle. After running poorly over shorter distances he was ruled out of a bid for the Champion Hurdle and was switched to steeplechasing. In his first season as a chaser he won the Mildmay Novices' Chase and finished second in a strong renewal of the Feltham Chase. The New One (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

The New One was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt races. In a career running from November 2011 to December 2018 he ran in 40 races, winning 20 times, being placed a further nine times and earning over £1,000,000 in win and place prize money. In the 2011/2012 National Hunt season he won three of his four races when competing in National Hunt Flat races including the Champion Standard Open NH Flat Race at Aintree Racecourse. In the following year, competing over hurdles, he won four of his six starts including the Leamington Novices' Hurdle and the Baring Bingham Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. In the following season he won the International Hurdle and finished third in Champion Hurdle before winning the Aintree Hurdle. In the 2014/15 season he won his first four races including a second International Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle Trial. He went on to win three more Champion Hurdle Trials, a third International Hurdle and a Welsh Champion Hurdle. The New One was retired after being pulled up in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham on 15 December 2018.

Albertas Run was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt races. He won two National Hunt Flat races and became a successful hurdler, winning the National Hunt Novices' Handicap Hurdle Final and the John Smith's Extra Cold Handicap Hurdle in 2007. He became more successful as a Steeplechaser, winning four Grade I races: the Royal and SunAlliance Chase, the Melling Chase and two runnings of the Ryanair Chase. His other wins included the Reynoldstown Novices' Chase, the Amlin 1965 Chase and the Old Roan Chase.

Trabolgan Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Trabolgan is a retired, Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. In a racing career which was seriously disrupted by injuries and other health problems, he won five times from seventeen starts between December 2002 and March 2010. After showing promising, but unremarkable form in his early career he showed great improvement when switched to steeplechasing in the autumn of 2004. In March 2005 at Cheltenham Racecourse he won the Grade I Royal & SunAlliance Chase, one of the season's most prestigious races for Novice chasers. On his next appearance in November 2005, he won the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup under the biggest weights carried to victory in the race for twenty years. At the time, he was regarded as one of the best steeplechasers in training, but he never won again: he missed the next three years with injury and failed to recover his form when returning to the track.

Oscar Whisky was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. In his early career he showed promise, winning two National Hunt Flat races and two novice hurdles. In the 2010/2011 National Hunt season he emerged as one of the leading hurdlers in the British Isles, winning the Welsh Champion Hurdle and the Aintree Hurdle as well as finishing third behind Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle. In the following season he won the Relkeel Hurdle and a second Aintree Hurdle. He won the Ascot Hurdle and a second Relkeel Hurdle in 2012/2013 before being moved up to compete in steeplechases in the following season when he won the Dipper Novices' Chase and the Scilly Isles Novices' Chase. Oscar Whisky was fatally injured in a fall at Sandown Park Racecourse on 6 December 2014.

Granville Again was an Irish-bred racehorse who competed in National Hunt races and recorded his most important win in the 1993 Champion Hurdle. In his early career he won two of his three National Hunt Flat races and was a successful Novice Hurdler, winning the Dovecote Novices' Hurdle and Top Novices' Hurdle as well as finishing second in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle. In the 1991/1992 season, Granville Again won all five of his completed races including the Champion Hurdle Trial and the Scottish Champion Hurdle but fell when second favourite for the Champion Hurdle. In the following season he was beaten in his first three starts but returned to his best form to defeat a strong field in the Champion Hurdle. He never won again and failed to finish in the first three in his last ten races. He was retired from racing in 1996 and died in 2003 at the age of seventeen.

Pineau de Re French-bred racehorse

Pineau de Re is a French-bred, British-trained AQPS racehorse best known for winning the 2014 Grand National.

Deep Sensation was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who competed under National Hunt rules. He ran in six consecutive Cheltenham Festivals and is best known for his win in the 1993 Queen Mother Champion Chase. In his first three seasons he was campaigned in hurdle races, recording his most notable success in the 1990 Tote Gold Trophy. When switched to larger obstacles he was one of the leading novice steeplechasers of 1991/1992, winning the Lightning Novices' Chase and the Nottinghamshire Novices' Chase. He reached his peak in the following season, when he took the H & T Walker Gold Cup, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Melling Chase. He never won another major race but recorded two minor wins and was placed in several important chases over the next two years. He was retired from racing after a narrow defeat in the 1995 Melling Chase after winning thirteen of his forty-nine races and being placed on twenty-one occasions. He died in November 2003 at the age of eighteen.

Bacchanal was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. He was lightly-raced, winning ten of his twenty races between January 1999 and January 2003. As a novice hurdler he won two of his four races and in the following season he won the Gerry Feilden Hurdle before recording his biggest win in the Stayers' Hurdle. He later developed into a top class steeplechaser, winning the Feltham Novices' Chase, Reynoldstown Novices' Chase and Aon Chase and twice finishing third in the King George VI Chase. He returned to hurdles to win the Long Distance Hurdle in 2002, but was killed in a fall at Cheltenham in January 2003.

Cole Harden Irish racehorse

Cole Harden is an Irish-bred, British-trained racehorse who competes in National Hunt racing. After winning both of his National Hunt Flat races in 2013 he went on to win novice hurdle races at Fontwell and Newbury in the 2013/2014 National Hunt season. In the following season he emerged as a leading staying hurdler, winning the West Yorkshire Hurdle before achieving his biggest success in the World Hurdle.

Anzum was a British Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his performances in National Hunt racing. After failing to win in eight races on the flat he made an immediate impact when switched to hurdle races, winning his first six races over obstacles including the Summit Junior Hurdle and taking third place in the Triumph Hurdle. After winning only once in the next three years he established himself as a leading staying hurdler in 1999 with wins in the Stayers' Hurdle, Champion Stayers Hurdle and Long Walk Hurdle. He ran his last race in April 2001 and was retired with a record of ten wins and fourteen places from thirty-two starts.

Cyborgo was a French-bred, British-trained AQPS racehorse. A full-brother to Hors La Loi III he began his racing career in his native country before being transferred to England to compete in National Hunt racing. In his first season in Britain he won two of his six races over hurdles including the Mersey Novices' Hurdle. In the following year he won five consecutive races including the Rendlesham Hurdle before finishing second in the Stayers' Hurdle and then returned after a twelve-month absence to win the Stayers' Hurdle at the second attempt in 1996. When Cyborgo began to compete in steeplechases in 1997 he won four of his first five races including Mildmay Novices' Chase but never won again. He was retired from professional racing 1999 and died two years later at the age of eleven. Cyborgo was noted for his front-running style and produced many of his best performances on soft or heavy going.

Charter Party was an Irish-bred British-trained thoroughbred racehorse, best known for his win in the 1988 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He overcame persistent injury problems to win twelve races under National Hunt rules. He showed promise as a hurdler and as a Novice steeplechaser before recording his first major win in the 1986 National Hunt Handicap Chase. As a ten-year-old in 1988 he defeated Desert Orchid in the Gainsborough Chase, before taking the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March. He never won again, but produced a fine effort to finish third on heavy ground in the 1989 Gold Cup.

Thistlecrack British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Thistlecrack is a British Thoroughbred racehorse who competes in National Hunt races. Unraced until he was five years old, he recorded his first win in a National Hunt Flat race in 2014. In the 2014/15 National Hunt season he won two minor hurdle races before improving when tried over long distances and winning the Grade 1 Sefton Novices' Hurdle. In the following season he established himself as the best staying hurdler in Britain with wins in the Long Distance Hurdle, Long Walk Hurdle, Cleeve Hurdle, World Hurdle and Liverpool Hurdle. When switched to steeplechasing in the following season he made an immediate impact, taking the Worcester Novices' Chase before beating more experienced horses in the King George VI Chase.

Buveur d'Air is a French-bred British-trained AQPS racehorse who competes in National Hunt races. After winning twice in his native France he moved to England and won the Top Novices' Hurdle in 2016. In the following season he won two steeplechases before reverting to hurdle races to win the Contenders Hurdle and then recording his biggest success in the Champion Hurdle. In the 2017–18 season he was unbeaten, winning the Fighting Fifth Hurdle, Christmas Hurdle and a second Champion Hurdle. The 2018-19 season saw him win both the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and the Contenders Hurdle for the second time. In November 2019 he sustained a freak injury in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and did not race for the rest of the season.

Native River is an Irish-bred, British-trained, Thoroughbred racehorse who races under National Hunt rules. He is a specialist long-distance steeplechaser known for his front-running style and apparently inexhaustible stamina. He won three minor hurdle races but began to show better form in the 2015/16 when taking the Worcester Novices' Chase and the Mildmay Novices' Chase. He emerged as a top-class steeplechaser in the following season when he won the Hennessy Gold Cup, Welsh Grand National and Denman Chase as well as finishing third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. In the spring of 2018 he won a second Denman Chase before recording his biggest win in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Penhill is a British-bred racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt racing. Racing on the flat in England he showed good form in handicap races, winning five times from eighteen starts. When transferred to Ireland to race over obstacles he was one of the best Novice Hurdlers of the 2016/2017 season, winning six races including the Joe Mac Novice Hurdle, Guinness Novice Hurdle and Spa Novices' Hurdle. His subsequent career was disrupted by chronic injury problems but he recorded his biggest win in March 2018 when he won the Stayers' Hurdle.

Paisley Park is an Irish-bred, British-trained racehorse best known for his achievements in National Hunt. He showed promise when finishing second in a National Hunt Flat race on his debut but nearly died when he contracted colic shortly afterwards. He won one race as a Novice Hurdler in the 2017/18 National Hunt season and established himself as an outstanding stayer in the following season when he won the Betfair Stayers' Handicap Hurdle, Long Walk Hurdle, Cleeve Hurdle and Stayers' Hurdle. In the 2019/20 National Hunt season he won the Long Distance Hurdle and a second Cleeve Hurdle. In his next campaign he took the Long Walk Hurdle again and ran third in the Stayers' Hurdle.
