Auburn University was established in 1856 in Auburn, Alabama. [1] Some 9,000 students are members of the 54 Greek letter organizations at Auburn University. These organizations are overseen by three governing councils: the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Professional fraternities operate independently from the three councils. Each year, Auburn's Greek letter organizations contribute around $1,400,000 and 50,000 hours of community service.
Over 9,000 students are members of the 54 Greek letter organizations at Auburn University. [2] In additional to serving as social organizations, Greek letter organizations at Auburn support academic success, community service, leadership opportunities, and personal development. [2] Each year, Auburn's Greek letter organizations contribute around $1,400,000 and 50,000 hours of community service. [3] These organizations are overseen by three governing councils: the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. [2]
The Interfraternity Council was brought to Auburn University over 100 years ago with the founding of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity in 1878. [2] Auburn is home to 28 fraternities that involve around 3,200 members or 24% of the male student population. [4] [2] The Interfraternity Council's missions' statement is to “govern, to serve, to represent, and to promote, with the highest standard of integrity, its member fraternities.” [2] Fraternity members reside in chapter houses. [1]
Women were first admitted to Auburn in 1892. [1] The Panhellenic Council was created with the chartering of a Kappa Delta sorority chapter at Auburn University in 1929. [2] The organization includes eighteen sororities and women's fraternities that are members of the National Panhellenic Conference. [5] [2] Around 5,400 students are active in a sororities and women's fraternities at Auburn University, representing about 43% of the female undergraduate population. [4] [2] [5] Some 16% of the university's dormitory housing is set aside for sororities. [4] [1]
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) includes African American fraternities and sororities that are members of the national organization with the same name. It was founded fifty years ago with the chartering of the first black fraternity at Auburn University, Omega Psi Phi, in 1972. [2] [6] The first black sorority at Auburn University was Delta Sigma Theta in 1974. [6] The council now includes four fraternities and four sororities, with around 100 members. [7] [2] The council members at Auburn have a tradition of performing a Tiger Stomp Step Show and the Unity Yard Show. [8] [9]
The now-dormant Multi-Cultural Greek Council was established in 2019. [10] It consisted of Omega Delta Phi multicultural fraternity and Kappa Delta Chi Latina sorority. [10]

Dartmouth College is host to many fraternities and sororities, and a significant percentage of the undergraduate student body is active in Greek life. In the fall of 2022, 35 percent of male students belong to a fraternity and 36 percent of students belong to a sorority. Greek organizations at Dartmouth provide both social and residential opportunities for students and are the only single-sex residential option on campus. Greek organizations at Dartmouth do not provide dining options, as regular meal service has been banned in Greek houses since 1909.
The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is an umbrella organization for 26 national and international women's sororities throughout the United States and Canada. Panhellenic refers to the group's members being autonomous social Greek-letter societies of college women and alumnae.
The Professional Fraternity Association (PFA) is an American association of national, collegiate, professional fraternities and sororities that was formed in 1978. Since PFA groups are discipline-specific, members join while pursuing graduate degrees as well as undergraduate degrees. PFA groups seek to develop their members professionally in addition to the social development commonly associated with Panhellenic fraternities. Membership requirements of the PFA are broad enough to include groups that do not recruit new members from a single professional discipline. The PFA has welcomed service and honor fraternities as members; however, Greek letter honor societies more commonly belong to the Association of College Honor Societies.
Phi Omega Pi (ΦΩΠ) was a national collegiate sorority operating in the United States from 1922 until 1946 when its chapters were absorbed by several larger sororities, and merged with the national sorority, Delta Zeta.
Washington & Jefferson College is host to 8 Greek organizations and a significant percentage of the undergraduate student body is active in Greek life. With 43% of women and 40% of men of the student body participating in "greek life," fraternities and sororities play a significant role in student life at W&J. The Princeton Review named Washington & Jefferson College 12th on their 2010 list of "Major Frat and Sorority Scene" in the United States. As of 2024, the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life recognized 4 fraternities, Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, and Phi Kappa Psi, and 4 sororities, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi. The fraternities are governed by a local Interfraternal Council and the sororities are governed by a local Panhellenic Council, while the Greek Judiciary manages broad policy violations at the chapter-level. All Greek organizations occupy College-owned houses on Chestnut Street on campus. All members of fraternities and sororities must pay the $100 "Greek Membership Fee," a levy designed to fund leadership seminars and other educational events for Greeks.
Clemson University opened in 1893 as an all-male military college. It was not until seventy years later in 1959 that the first fraternities and sororities arrived on campus. In the 1970s, they became recognized as national fraternities and sororities. The Greek life has now increased to 44 chapters on campus: fraternities and sororities from the National Panhellenic Conference, the North American Interfraternity Conference, the Multicultural Greek Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
The National APIDA Panhellenic Association (NAPA) is an umbrella council for twenty Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American fraternities and sororities in universities in the United States.
