The North Star Conference or NSC was a women's conference in the NCAA. The conference existed from the 1983–84 school year through the 1991–92 school year. Originally announced in 1983, the conference was formed by charter members Butler, Dayton, DePaul, Detroit, Evansville, Loyola (Chicago), Notre Dame, and Xavier. Although the conference was to offer competition in cross country, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball, the conference was created primarily as a basketball conference. With the exception of Butler and Dayton, all charter members' women's basketball teams were already competing at the NCAA Division I level; Butler and Dayton upgraded their teams from NCAA Division II and commenced competition in the conference's second season. The conference was effectively absorbed by the Mid-Continent Conference, as six of its final seven members moved their women's sports to that organization.

James Kevin Smith is a former American football running back in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Raiders, the Washington Redskins, and the Minnesota Vikings. He was drafted by Washington in the fourth round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He played high school football in Kankakee, Illinois at Westview High School there before the merging of Westview and Eastridge High.

The St. John's Red Storm men's soccer team represents St. John's University in New York City, New York in all in NCAA Division I soccer competitions. From 1992 to 2013, the Red Storm went to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament in 20 of 22 seasons, with four appearances in the College Cup semifinals and two appearances in the final, winning the national championship in 1996. The team posted 27 consecutive seasons with a win percentage of .500 or better from 1987 to 2013 before suffering three consecutive losing seasons from 2014 to 2016.

The Midwestern Conference, alternatively Conference of Midwestern Universities, was a college athletic conference which operated in Illinois and Indiana from 1970 to 1972. It was composed of schools which had recently moved from Division II to Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The conference sponsored only men's sports; awarding championships in baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, swimming, tennis, indoor & outdoor track and field, and wrestling.

Willis Reuben Brandow was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played with the Calgary Tigers, Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatoon Crescents of the Western Canada Hockey League. He also played with the Winnipeg Selkirks in his home province, and later the Duluth Hornets of the American Hockey Association. He was later the coach of the Wisconsin Badgers men's ice hockey program from 1926–27. In 1932, he died in a car accident.

George James Guida was an American sprinter who competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics running the 400 meters. He finished sixth in the final behind Arthur Wint's Olympic Record. Injured in the final, he did not run on the American 4x400 meters relay team that ultimately won the gold medal. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While running for Villanova University he was the 1947 Indoor National Champion at 600 yards.

The 2017 Big Ten softball tournament was held at Wilpon Complex on the campus of University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, from May 11 through May 13, 2017. As the tournament winner, Minnesota earned the Big Ten Conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division I softball tournament. All games of the tournament aired on BTN.
