Magic: The Gathering theme decks are pre-built decks containing a fixed set of cards. These cards are supposed to complement each other well within a given theme. Theme decks are also a means for newcomers to start the game with a deck instead of a random assortment of cards. Players often buy preconstructed decks and swap out some of the weaker cards for more powerful ones, gradually improving their deck. [1] Otherwise procuring enough cards to build a deck around a coherent theme often requires a significant investment. Theme decks and intro packs are also well suited to be played against each other because they are usually similar in power level. The themes in these decks can also be a quick way to get a feel for the overarching themes in a new set.
Beginning with the Tempest set in 1997, Wizards of the Coast began producing 60-card theme decks (also called preconstructed decks). Beginning with Shards of Alara in 2008 these were replaced by Intro Packs. [2] These contain a set of 41 predetermined cards and a booster pack from the respective expansion. [3]
The following is a list of preconstructed theme decks, sorted by product group and then chronologically.

Magic: The Gathering is a tabletop and digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield. Released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, Magic was the first trading card game and had approximately thirty-five million players as of December 2018, and over twenty billion Magic cards were produced in the period from 2008 to 2016, during which time it grew in popularity.
The Odyssey is a Magic: The Gathering expert-level block. It consists of a trio of expansion sets: Odyssey, Torment and Judgment.
Invasion is a Magic: The Gathering block that consists of the expert-level expansion sets Invasion, Planeshift and Apocalypse. The Invasion block centered on multicolored cards.
The collectible card game Magic: The Gathering published seven expansion sets from 1993–1995, and one compilation set. These sets contained new cards that "expanded" on the base sets of Magic with their own mechanical theme and setting; these new cards could be played on their own, or mixed in with decks created from cards in the base sets. With Magic's runaway success, many of the printings of these early sets were too small to satisfy the rapidly growing fanbase. Cards from them became rare, hard to find, and expensive. It was not until Fallen Empires and Homelands that Wizards of the Coast was able to print enough cards to meet demand; additionally, Wizards of the Coast published Chronicles, a reprint set that helped fix many of the scarcity issues with the earliest sets.
Time Spiral is a Magic: The Gathering expert-level block consisting of the expansion sets Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, and Future Sight. It is set on the plane of Dominaria, the first time that that plane had been visited since 8th Edition.
The collectible card game Magic: The Gathering has released compilation sets, reprint sets, and box sets over its history. These are distinct from core sets and expansion sets, the most heavily marketed sources of new cards. With the exception of Chronicles, reprint sets generally do not affect tournament legality in supported formats; for example, cards reprinted in the Modern Masters reprint set, while legal for tournament play, did not necessarily cause the card to be included in the "Standard" environment.
Magic: The Gathering formats are various ways in which the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game can be played. Each format provides rules for deck construction and gameplay, with many confining the pool of permitted cards to those released in a specified group of Magic card sets. The Wizards Play Network, the governing body that oversees official Magic competitive play, categorizes its tournament formats into Constructed and Limited.
The Lorwyn block is a Magic: The Gathering expert-level block consisting of two sets: Lorwyn and Morningtide. A third set, codenamed "Jelly", was originally planned as part of the Lorwyn block, but partway into the design of Lorwyn, it was split into a two-set block. Jelly was revealed as Shadowmoor, the first set of the new two-set block. The two blocks were linked together and rotated through the official tournament formats as a single, four-expansion unit. The primary theme of the Lorwyn block is tribalism.
Shadowmoor is a Magic: The Gathering block consisting of the expansion sets Shadowmoor and Eventide. The block was originally conceived as a single set that was to be released as the third in the Lorwyn block, but it was ultimately released as a semi-independent two-set block. Shadowmoor was linked thematically to Lorwyn, and the four sets comprising the two blocks rotated through official tournament formats together.
The Bourgeois Tarot deck is a 19th century pattern of tarot cards of German origin that is still used for playing card games today in western Europe and Canada. It is not used for divinatory purposes, for which tarot cards are most commonly known outside continental Europe. This deck is most commonly found in France, Belgian Wallonia, Swiss Romandy and Canadian Québec for playing French Tarot; in southwest Germany for playing Cego and Dreierles; and in Denmark for Danish Tarok. The pattern is produced in two different designs today: the Black Forest Cego pack used only in southwest Germany and the Tarot Nouveau used everywhere else that this pattern is employed, but especially in France. The pattern is also called the Domestic Scenes pattern, but the name Bourgeois Tarot is the one preferred by the International Playing Card Society.
A collectible card game (CCG), also called a trading card game (TCG) among other names, is a type of card game that mixes strategic deck building elements with features of trading cards, introduced with Magic: The Gathering in 1993.
Commander is a series of supplemental Magic: the Gathering card game products. Its mechanics are derived from a fan-created format known as "Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH)". The official Commander format is "the only sanctioned format maintained by an outside entity" other than Wizards of the Coast.
The Masquerade Cycle, sometimes incorrectly referred to as the "Masques block", is a Magic: The Gathering cycle that is set on the planes of Mercadia, Rath, and plane of Dominaria. It consists of the expansion sets Mercadian Masques, Nemesis, and Prophecy. Mercadian Masques was the first set that is not subject to the Wizards of the Coast Reprint Policy, meaning that none of its cards appear on its Reserved List.
The Alara block is a Magic: The Gathering expert-level expansion block, consisting of the expansion sets Shards of Alara, Conflux and Alara Reborn. The Alara block focuses on multicolored cards, in particular cards with three or more colors.
Pokémon TCG Online is a 2012 video game based on the Pokémon Trading Card Game developed by Dire Wolf Digital, and is available for Microsoft Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. It was originally released in March 2011 under the name of Pokémon Trainer Challenge as a browser-based game.
Hearthstone is a digital collectible card game released by Blizzard Entertainment in 2014, available for Microsoft Windows and macOS PCs and iOS and Android smartphones. The game is free-to-play, with players gaining in-game currency and card packs via winning matches and completing quests, while real-world money can be spent to acquire additional card packs and cosmetic items. The game has been critically well-received and financially successful, estimated in August 2017 to earn nearly US$40 million per month. As of November 2018, Blizzard has reported more than 100 million Hearthstone players. Blizzard has continued to expand the game with the addition of multiple expansions, adventures and game modes.
The collectible card game Magic: The Gathering was first released in 1993 with very few restrictions on how players could construct their decks. The game evolved over time to encompass many different formats with various constraints for how players could construct their decks. Constructed formats, for instance, allow players to build decks in advance using cards from their collection, although only a subset of cards are allowed. Another major development was the creation of officially sanctioned tournaments for prize money. These official tournaments created an incentive for players to continue to buy cards for new sets, and helped establish a long-term future for the game.
