The MTV Africa Music Awards were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa. The 2008 and 2010 events took place in Nigeria, first in Abuja and then in Lagos. Born and raised in Mahikeng, North West, he is regarded as one of the most successful artists in South Africa. In 2014, he established his own record label, Family Tree Records. Nyovest rose to fame with the release of his debut studio album, Tsholofelo (2014) which produced the hit singles "Gusheshe" and "Doc Shebeleza".

It peaked at number 1, making it Kwesta's first number one on the chart. It was certified 5× platinum by RISA. As of June 2016, the song had spent 14 non-consecutive weeks at 1 and was the most playlisted song on South African radio in 2016.
