Norfolk Island is an external territory of Australia located in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and New Caledonia, approximately 1,412 km east of Australia's Evans Head and about 900 km from Lord Howe Island. Together with the neighbouring Phillip Island and Nepean Island, the three islands collectively form the Territory of Norfolk Island. At the 2021 census, it had 2,188 inhabitants living on a total land area of about 35 km2 (14 sq mi). Its capital and administrative seat is Kingston, while its main town and largest settlement is Burnt Pine.
USS Leyte was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during and shortly after World War II for the United States Navy. The ship was the third US Navy ship to bear the name. Leyte was commissioned in April 1946, too late to serve in World War II. She spent most of her career in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean, but also saw service in the Korean War, in which she earned two battle stars. Garden Island is a small stony island that is part of the Partridge Island Group, lying close to the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, Australia, in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel between Bruny Island and the mainland. The D'Entrecasteaux Channel is the mouth for the Huon River.
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as 23,401,892 – an increase of 8.8 per cent or 1,894,175 people over the 2011 census. Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Norfolk Island is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have reached Norfolk Island on December 30, 2021.
