Shogi, also known as Japanese chess, is a two-player strategy board game that is the Japanese variant of chess. It is the most popular chess variant in Japan. Shōgi means general's board game.

The research and development of shogi software has been carried out mainly by freelance programmers, university research groups and private companies. By 2017, the strongest programs were outperforming the strongest human players.

Taichi Nakamura is a Japanese professional shogi player, ranked 7-dan. He is a former holder of the Ōza title.
Shōta Chida is a Japanese professional shogi player, ranked 7-dan. Chida is known for his novel research into shogi opening theory using computer shogi engines.
Kenjirō Abe is a Japanese professional shogi player ranked 7-dan.

Tomoka Nishiyama is a Japanese women's professional shogi player ranked 3-dan. She is the current holder of the Jo-Ō and Hakurei major titles as well as a former holder of the Ōza and Ōshō titles.
The Eiō (叡王) is one of the eight major titles of professional shogi cosponsored by Fujiya Co. and the Japan Shogi Association (JSA). The tournament initially started out as a non-title tournament in 2015, but was upgraded to major title status in May 2017. The current Eiō title holder is Sōta Fujii.
