Sophie Ballantine Hawkins is an American singer-songwriter, musician and painter. Born in New York City, she attended the Manhattan School of Music for a year as a percussionist before leaving to pursue a music career. She achieved critical and commercial success with her first two albums, producing a string of single hits including "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover", "Right Beside You", and "As I Lay Me Down". However, a dispute with her record label Sony Music over her third album, Timbre, caused her to establish her own independent label, Trumpet Swan Productions, which has published her subsequent recordings.
Anthony Newley was an English actor, singer and songwriter. Newley achieved success as a performer in such diverse fields as rock and roll and stage and screen acting. As a recording artist he enjoyed a dozen Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart between 1959 and 1962, including two number one hits. With songwriting partner Leslie Bricusse, Newley wrote "Feeling Good", which was popularised by Nina Simone and covered by many other popular artists, as well as the title song of 1964 film Goldfinger. Bricusse and Newley received an Academy Award nomination for the film score of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971).
Leslie Bricusse is an English composer, lyricist, and playwright, most prominently working in musicals and also cinema theme music. He is best known for writing the music and lyrics for the films Doctor Dolittle, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Scrooge, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, the songs "Goldfinger", "You Only Live Twice", "Can You Read My Mind " from Superman and "Le Jazz Hot!" with Henry Mancini from Victor/Victoria.
"Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" is a song written, composed, recorded, and released by singer-songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins. Released in 1992 from her debut album Tongues and Tails, the song achieved success in many countries worldwide; in the United States, it reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Norway. In the United Kingdom, the single peaked at number 14 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Hawkins' second-most successful song on that chart after "Right Beside You", which reached number 13 in 1994.

Instead, this album replaces single "Don't Don't Tell Me No", The Band cover "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "We Are One Body" from the previous album for Whaler track "Swing from Limb to Limb ", the Butcher mix of "As I Lay Me Down" and another single from Tongues and Tails, "Mysteries We Understand". This album has also been issued with the title Essential Sophie B. Hawkins.

It contains no songs from what was then her most recent album, Timbre, released in 1999; instead, besides Hawkins' main singles, it contains a variety of tracks from her first two albums that were not issued as singles, ending with an exclusive cover of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", originally by The Band. The album was only released internationally, and not in Hawkins' home country of the United States. An album of the same title, also released as Essential Sophie B. Hawkins, was issued the following year there.
