The Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009 is an act of the Parliament of New Zealand relating to governance of Auckland Council as a "super-city". [1]

Contents

Background

In 2007, the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance was established by the Labour government in order to report after the 2008 New Zealand general election. [2] Recommendations of the commission relating to a cabinet minister for Auckland and a cabinet committee for Auckland were rejected. [3]

Provisions

The act originally required that the council consist of 20 seats besides the Mayor of Auckland. [1]

The act made the Auckland Council the most populated local authority in Australasia. [4]

The Independent Māori Statutory Board has specific powers under the act to "promote issues of significance to Māori". [5]

A consultation was held by the Auckland Council on allowing Māori seats which would have required amending the act, but the council voted against this proposal in 2023. [1] [6]
