London Buses route 278 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Heathrow Airport and Ruislip, it is operated by Abellio London.
Route 278 commenced on 7 December 2019 as part of a restructure of routes in the lead up to the opening of the Elizabeth line. [1] The introduction of route 278 coincided with the withdrawal of route 140 between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Airport as well as the introduction of limited stop route X140 serving only major stops between Harrow bus station and Heathrow Airport. [1] [2] [3] It is operated by Abellio London out of its Armstrong Way garage with existing double-decker buses. [4] [5] [6]
The service was free within the Heathrow free travel zone, until the travel zone was abolished in June 2021 after Heathrow Airport Holdings withdrew funding. [7] [8]

Heathrow Connect was a train service in London provided jointly by Heathrow Express and Great Western Railway (GWR), between Paddington station and Heathrow Airport. The service followed the same route as the non-stop Heathrow Express service but called at certain intermediate stations, connecting several locations in West London with each other, the airport, and Central London. It ran every half-hour throughout the day and evening. The service was launched on 12 June 2005 and ceased on 19 May 2018, when it was absorbed into the TfL Rail concession, in advance of becoming part of the Elizabeth line in 2021.

TfL Rail is the concession operating commuter services on two separate railway lines in London and its environs whilst the planned link-up between these lines is being constructed. This will form part of the Crossrail service when it opens. At that time, the TfL Rail name will be retired and the services will become operated by Crossrail, with the route named the Elizabeth line. The Elizabeth line was initially due to open in December 2018.
