Long Island Sports Hall of Fame

The Long Island Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1984 to honor sports figures who lived or played on Long Island, New York. The physical location was a small display [1] on the lower level of the now "dark and dormant" [2] Nassau Coliseum [3] through at least 1994. [4] Among the first inductees chosen were American footballers John Schmitt, [5] Jim Brown [3] and Ed Danowski, [6] basketball's Julius Erving, [3] polo's Tom Hitchcock, [6] Yankee pitcher Whitey Ford, [3] ice hockey's Mike Bossy, [6] Dodger catcher Roy Campanella [6] and bowler Andy Varipapa. [6] The first induction was on November 30, 1984. [6] Early induction ceremonies were formal events, with a 1987 report that a "black-tied crowd will be out in force." [7] [8]

It is one of the larger public auditoriums in the New York metropolitan area.

The Mitchel Athletic Complex is part of the Mitchel Field complex, located in Uniondale, New York, on the site of the decommissioned Mitchel Air Force Base. The facility is owned by Nassau County. It is used mostly for football and soccer and also sometimes for athletics. The athletic complex was built in 1984 and was renovated in 1997; it hosted track and field and soccer events during the 1998 Goodwill Games. Mitchel Field is also home to Nassau Coliseum, Nassau Community College, Hofstra University, Lockheed Corporation, and the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

Andre Bernard Tippett Sr. is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons with the New England Patriots. He played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes, where he was recognized as a consensus All-American in 1981. A second-round pick in the 1982 NFL draft, Tippett was selected to five Pro Bowls and was named first-team All-Pro twice in his career. Since 2007, he has been the Patriots' executive director of community affairs. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Robert Glen Bourne is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who played for the New York Islanders and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1974 and 1988. He was a four-time Stanley Cup winner and 1984 Canada Cup champion. He was inducted into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame.

The Theodore Roosevelt Award is the highest honor the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) may confer on an individual. The award is awarded annually to a graduate from an NCAA member institution who earned a varsity letter in college for participation in intercollegiate athletics, and who ultimately became a distinguished citizen of national reputation based on outstanding life accomplishment. Each awardee, by personal example, is said to exemplify the ideals and purposes to which collegiate athletics are dedicated.

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame was incorporated in July 2005 under the New York State Board of Regents, as a nonprofit organization and holds a provisional charter to operate as a museum in the state of New York. It recognizes musicians, music executives, and other music and entertainment professionals who have contributed to the musical and entertainment heritage of Long Island through Induction Ceremonies held every 2 years since 2006. Inductees are selected by a committee that determines their eligibility through their contributions and time spent living and performing within the geographic area of Long Island, which includes Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Elections to the Baseball Hall of Fame for 1979 followed the system in place since 1978, except that players who appeared on fewer than 5% of BBWAA ballots would now no longer be eligible in future elections. The Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) voted by mail to select from recent major league players and elected Willie Mays. The Veterans Committee met in closed sessions to consider older major league players as well as managers, umpires, executives, and figures from the Negro leagues. It selected Warren Giles and Hack Wilson. A formal induction ceremony was held in Cooperstown, New York, on August 5, 1979, with Commissioner of Baseball Bowie Kuhn presiding. The annual Hall of Fame Game, an exhibition contest, was played the following day; this was the first time that the induction ceremony and game were held on different days.

The Lt. Frank J. Haggerty Award is given to the top men's college basketball player from an NCAA Division I school in the New York metropolitan area. The Haggerty Award is presented by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA). First awarded in 1936, it is the oldest and arguably most prestigious award given to a metropolitan area player. It is named after Frank J. Haggerty, a basketball and baseball star athlete from Long Island, New York who "was the first graduate of both Chaminade High School and St. John's University to die in military service during World War II … The Fathers Club of the Mineola school, to honor Haggerty, class of 1936, introduced a basketball tournament in his memory," according to the MBWA's website.

The Hofstra Pride men's basketball team, known until 2000 as the Hofstra Flying Dutchmen, is the basketball team that represents Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, United States. Hofstra played its first game in 1936, and currently competes in the Coastal Athletic Association.

Bruce Arthur Blakeman is an American attorney and politician currently serving as the 10th County Executive of Nassau County, New York. He was elected in the 2021 election, defeating Democratic incumbent Laura Curran. He previously served as a commissioner for the New York-New Jersey Port Authority as well as a Nassau County legislator and Hempstead town councilman.

John Van Nostrand was a professional tennis player from the United States. His sister Molly Van Nostrand also played tennis professionally. Both were coached by their father, Kingdon Van Nostrand.

James C. Metzger is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of The Whitmore Agency, LLC a Long Island insurance brokerage and financial services firm that opened during 1989. Metzger is a former USILA All-American Team college lacrosse player at Hofstra University and an multi-sport athlete at Half Hollow Hills High School East, HHHE, in Dix Hills, New York. His high school lacrosse jersey (#21) and university lacrosse jersey (#56) have been retired, and his high school football jersey (#21) also has been retired. Metzger is the first and only football alumnus and one of only two lacrosse players in HHHE history to have his jersey retired. Metzger has established financial endowments at both his high school and college alma maters. He is a leading athletics benefactor in New York State.

Paul Cartier is the stadium organist for Major League Baseball's New York Yankees and the National Hockey League's New York Islanders.

The Battle of Long Island refers to a collegiate sports rivalry between the Hofstra Pride and the Stony Brook Seawolves, who both are located on Long Island in the U.S. state of New York. Hofstra University is the largest private university on Long Island and is located in Hempstead, New York in Nassau County, while Stony Brook University is the largest public university in the state of New York by area and is located in Suffolk County. Since 2022, both schools have been members of the Colonial Athletic Association, with Stony Brook playing in the America East Conference from 2001 to 2022.

Robert S. Bateson Jr. is a former American football linebacker who played for SUNY Cortland, and later professionally for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Seahawks Bellusco.

Kingdon "King" Van Nostrand is an American tennis player and coach. In 2022 he became the leader in seniors tennis competition by winning a 43rd world title.
