Loren Long (born 1964) [1] is an American author of children's books best known for illustration. He won the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators' (SCBWI) Golden Kite Award for picture book illustration in 2004 for I Dream of Trains by Angela Johnson.
Long was born in Joplin, Missouri. [2] He graduated from University of Kentucky, with a BA in Graphic Design. [3] He lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife and two sons. [4] [2]
His career began at Gibson Greeting Cards in Cincinnati, Ohio eventually moving on to freelance illustration which gave him national exposure for children's books illustrations. A Simon & Schuster executive saw his work for Miles’ Song by Alice McGill and tapped him for the illustrations for I Dream of Trains by Angela Johnson. [5] In 2004, I Dream of Trains won the Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration. [6] In 2005, he was a Golden Kite Award Honoree for his illustrations in When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer by Walt Whitman. [5] [6] In 2010, he illustrated Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters by Barack Obama. [7]
When he was 12 years old, he learned that he was colorblind. In his work, he relies on strong lighting sources, color theory, and support from his family to overcome this obstacle. [8]

Katherine Alice Applegate, known professionally as K. A. Applegate, is an American young adult and children's fiction writer, best known as the author of the Animorphs, Remnants, and Everworld book series. She won the 2013 Newbery Medal for her 2012 children's novel The One and Only Ivan. Applegate's most popular books are science fiction, fantasy, and adventure novels. The Golden Kite Awards are given annually by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, an international children's writing organization, to recognize excellence in children’s literature. The award is a golden medallion showing a child flying a kite. Instituted in 1973, the Golden Kite Awards are the only children’s literary award judged by a jury of peers. Eligible books must be written or illustrated by SCBWI members, and submitted either by publishers or individuals.

The Crystal Kite Award is given by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) each year to recognize great books from the 70 SCBWI regions around the world.
