The Los Angeles International Competitions event focuses on the wine, spirits, beer and olive oil industries. Distributors and makers in each industry submit entries to be judged by a panel of experts.
The competitive event got its start shortly after the repeal of Prohibition in the late 1930s and is one of the longest running of its kind. [1] Originally known as the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition, the event now includes entries in the categories of wine, spirits, beer and extra virgin olive oil. The competition was created as part of the L.A. County Fair. Local guests could submit their wines and receive medals for their entries. The competition began accepting entries from other parts of the nation and allowed international submissions in 2002. The competition now runs separately from the L.A. County Fair, although award-winning submissions are featured for the duration of the Fair. [2]
Wine, spirits, commercial beer and extra virgin olive oil are the four individual categories in the international competitions.
The wine competition receives the most submissions. Categories include champagne, bordeaux, dessert wines, organic wines and others that are typical to similar events. Wine submissions are judged by a panel of 75 wine experts using a blind-tasting method. The wine competition is also the foundation for the wine education program at the L.A. County Fair.
The spirits competition was introduced in correlation with the wine competition in 2007. During the inaugural event, entries were limited to Blue Agave Tequilas. The competition was opened to all spirits and mixers in 2010. The judging panel consists of pub and bar owners, distillers and journalists with experience in the field.
The extra virgin olive oil category was added in 2002. The competition is open to international entries with oils coming from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and France. Currently the competition consists of two parts. The Northern Hemisphere Competition invites entries from Croatia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States. The Southern Hemisphere Competition includes entries from Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa and Uruguay. The competition was originally created to improve the breed of California extra virgin olive oils [3]
There are three categories in the competition: delicate, medium and robust. A number of awards are given at the end of the competition including 6 Best of Show awards. One domestic and one international Best of Show award is given per category. [4]
The beer component was introduced in 2000 and falls under the same blind-tasting method as the other competitions. The competition is the least popular of the event but also hosts international and domestic entries annually.
Awards are handed out in the form of gold, silver and bronze medals. In order to receive a gold medal, an entry needs a minimum of 90 points. Entries are judged based on the character and style of the wine using elements such as taste, texture and quality of ingredients. In addition to medals, a Best of Show and Best of Division are given per category in each competition. An award for best packaging design is also part of the competition.

The International Wine & Spirit Competition is an annual wine and spirit competition founded in 1969 by the German/British oenologist Anton Massel. Each year the competition receives entries from over 90 countries worldwide. The awards given by the competition are considered as high honors in the industry. The judging occurs annually, in London. Only brands that pay the entry fee of £159 per category are judged, and two or four bottles of each entry must be supplied, depending on the category entered.

The Collins College of Hospitality Management is a college part of the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The San Francisco World Spirits Competition was founded in 2001 by Anthony Dias Blue as an off-shoot of the San Francisco International Wine Competition. It assesses hundreds of entrants annually with tastings involving panels of expert judges selected each year from the spirits industry including mixologists, spirits buyers, and media from across the United States. Producers must submit their product for the competition and pay a fee for its evaluation. Not all entries are given awards but most receive a bronze, silver, or gold award from the tasting panel. The fact that most entrants receive an award likely involves some degree of self-selection, as the spirits producers choose whether to enter each of their brands in the competition and pay to receive a rating. Those entrants that are given a unanimous gold medal by the panel are given the distinction of a "double-gold" medal. Additionally, a "best in show" designation is awarded in each main category of spirits.

With a growing number of offerings, such as those produced by an increasing number of microdistilleries, various mechanisms have arisen to provide reviews and opinions of individual varieties of spirits. These events generally use expert panels and blind tastings within specific categories to provide opinions and ratings.
Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil is a 2011 nonfiction book by American author Tom Mueller about olive oil. The book describes the history of olive oil, including its religious, economic, and culinary uses, as well as the current state of the olive oil industry. Extra Virginity asserts that the global olive oil industry is rife with corruption and fraud due to lax governmental regulations, but it also presents stories of individuals, including growers and government officials, who seek to curb such practices and promote genuine extra virgin olive oil. The book also includes an appendix with advice to consumers for choosing good oil. Extra Virginity expands upon "Slippery Business", an article Mueller wrote for The New Yorker in 2007 which described the state of the Italian olive oil industry.

The New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC) is an annual extra virgin olive oil competition founded in 2013 by Curtis Cord, the publisher of the trade journal Olive Oil Times. The 2022 NYIOOC attracted 1,267 entries from 28 countries. It is the largest international olive oil competition in the world.
The Good Food Awards or GFAs is an annual award competition for outstanding American craft food producers and the farmers who provide their ingredients. Created by the Good Food Foundation, the Good Food Awards take place in San Francisco and are designed to celebrate foods that are "tasty, authentic, and responsibly produced."
